The Topdon Phoenix Max is the flagship model of the Phoenix range: a diagnostic scanner featuring a 13.3-inch display with 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, powered by an eight-core processor with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. The accompanying Phoenix MDCI Pro interface supports J2534, DoIP, CAN FD, D-PDU and RP1210 protocols and connects via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cable. The device diagnoses all systems across more than 200 vehicle manufacturers, handles all ten OBD modes and performs 35 service and maintenance procedures.
The primary focus is on control unit programming: online programming retrieves factory software from the server, online coding configures a replacement module to match the vehicle's equipment, and for the VAG group there are guided functions. The topology map displays the control units and their bus connections as a schematic diagram. The included licence covers 24 months for cars and light commercial vehicles, plus 12 months on optional software for heavy commercial vehicles.

Diagnostic functions:
The Topdon Phoenix Max performs comprehensive system diagnostics across all electronic control units in the vehicle. Beyond generic OBD data, it reads manufacturer-specific information for each brand.
- Reading and clearing fault codes: Retrieves stored codes with descriptions and status from every module. The device can scan up to eight CAN lines simultaneously, significantly reducing full scan time; clearing can be performed per module or across the entire vehicle.
- Live data: Displays measured values as numbers, graphs or combined in a single view. Values can be recorded during a test drive and reviewed side-by-side afterwards.
- Bidirectional control: Commands a component from the control unit to switch: a relay, injector, fan or valve. If the component responds to the command but fails to operate in service, the fault lies outside the component itself.
- Topology map: Displays control units and their communication buses as a schematic, showing fault status for each module. If an entire branch fails, the schematic identifies the bus or gateway rather than individual modules.
- Control unit information: Reads part numbers, hardware revision, software version and calibration data—essential for determining whether a module carries the correct programming for the vehicle.
Service and maintenance functions:
The Topdon Phoenix Max supports 35 service and maintenance procedures. Available functions may vary by manufacturer, model and model year.
Engine, fuel and drivetrain:
- Oil reset: Resets the service interval counter and clears the service reminder once maintenance is complete.
- Throttle body adjustment: Allows the engine control unit to relearn the full range of motion of the electronic throttle valve. If this step is skipped after cleaning or replacement, the idle air volume will deviate from what the control unit expects.
- Injector coding: Sets the calibration value for each cylinder's injector in the engine control unit. This value indicates how much the injector deviates from the nominal output; the control unit uses this to adjust the injection duration accordingly. Particularly important for common-rail diesel engines.
- Crankshaft tooth learning: Stores the manufacturing tolerance of the crankshaft reluctor ring, preventing gear irregularities from being misidentified as ignition misfires. Required after replacement of the engine control unit, crankshaft position sensor or flywheel.
- Power balance: Compares the torque contribution of each cylinder individually. A cylinder that is underperforming becomes apparent without requiring any components to be removed.
- Fuel trim reset (A/F): Returns the learned mixture correction to zero, allowing the control unit to re-establish the correct air-fuel ratio based on the lambda sensor signal.
- Automatic transmission relearning: Runs the self-learning process of the automatic gearbox again, restoring shift quality after servicing or an oil change.
- Start-stop enable or disable: Determines whether the vehicle automatically shuts down the engine when stationary.
- Cooling system bleeding: Operates the electric coolant pump to expel any trapped air from the system.
Exhaust aftertreatment:
- Diesel particulate filter regeneration (DPF): Performs forced regeneration and resets the load and ash data after filter replacement.
- Petrol particulate filter regeneration (GPF): The same procedure for the particulate filter on direct-injection petrol engines.
- AdBlue reset: Clears the counters and learned values of the SCR system after topping up or work on the dosing pump.
- EGR adjustment: Allows the exhaust gas recirculation valve to relearn its end positions and flow rates after cleaning or replacement.
- NOx sensor reset: Clears the correction values from the old sensor, enabling the new one to be calibrated from the baseline value.
Brake system:
- Electronic parking brake operation: Retracts the brake calliper pistons to the service position and returns them, allowing brake pads and discs to be replaced without forcing the adjustment mechanism.
- ABS bleeding: Operates the pump and valves in the control module to purge any air that remains in the system after it has been opened.
Suspension and steering:
- Steering angle sensor reset (SAS): Establishes the sensor value corresponding to straight-ahead driving. If this reference point is incorrect, the ESP system will intervene at the wrong moment.
- Suspension calibration: Adjusts the ride height and allows the height sensors to relearn after work on the sensor or control module.
Safety, tyres and driver assistance:
- Airbag control unit release: Clears recorded crash data and associated codes after airbags and seatbelt pretensioners have been replaced.
- Tyre pressure monitoring system reset (TPMS): Resets the system and extinguishes the warning after replacing a sensor, tyre or wheel.
- Tyre size recording: Records the fitted tyre size in the control unit.
- Immobiliser (IMMO): Learns keys, removes lost keys from memory and calibrates the control unit to the vehicle.
- Key and chip programming (IMMO PROG): Optional function for component-level work: read and write key chips, access EEPROM and MCU memory, and edit engine and transmission control unit memory. Requires the T-Ninja Box.
- Adaptive cruise control learning: Registers a replaced or repaired system control unit with the vehicle. Physical radar alignment is performed using separate ADAS calibration equipment.
Interior, body and lighting:
- Panoramic roof adjustment: Controls panoramic roof behaviour: locking, automatic closing in rain, memory position for sliding and tilting, and associated temperature threshold.
- Headlight levelling calibration (AFS): Calibrates the height adjustment and cornering function of the headlights to the vehicle's stance.
- Window learning: Re-records the upper and lower positions of the side windows, restoring pinch protection and one-touch operation.
- Seat learning: Reconnects a replaced or repaired seat with memory function to the control system.
- Climate control learning: Allows the mixing and distribution valves to re-establish their end positions after replacement of an actuator motor or control panel.
Electrical system and vehicle data:
- Battery registration (BMS): Communicates the type and capacity of the new battery to the charging system and clears learned ageing data. If this is omitted, the vehicle will charge according to the old battery's profile.
- Mileage writing: Sets the mileage in the control unit, intended to transfer the original reading after instrument cluster replacement.
- Rotor angle calibration: Records the difference between the rotor position measured by the drive motor sensor and the actual position of the magnetic field in hybrid and electric vehicles. If this angle drifts, the drive loses torque and efficiency.
- High-voltage battery reading: Retrieves the status and fault codes from the battery pack of hybrid and electric vehicles.
- Transport mode deactivation: Ends the factory mode that limits power consumption during transport and storage, disabling comfort functions.
- Language conversion: Changes the language of the vehicle's central control panel.
Special functions and capabilities:
The Topdon Phoenix Max features additional functions for programming and coding control units, accessing secure vehicle networks, and recording and supporting work activities.
Programming and coding:
- Online programming: Retrieves the software file for the selected control unit from the manufacturer's server and writes it to the vehicle. Available for thirteen brands: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Land Rover, Jaguar, Renault, Nissan, Subaru and Hyundai. Coverage extends per brand up to a specific model year.
- Online coding: Retrieves coding data from the manufacturer and writes it, allowing a replacement module to adopt the configuration of that vehicle. Available for twelve brands: Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru and Volkswagen.
- Offline programming: Writes software without accessing the manufacturer's server, available for Ford, Mazda, Opel and Vauxhall.
- Guided functions (VAG): Follows the steps prescribed by the manufacturer for Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda, with the device monitoring the sequence and conditions.
- Adaptation and configuration (VAG): Performs parameterisation, function activation and calibration and adjustment routines for Volkswagen and Audi.
- Unlock hidden functions: Activates factory settings that are disabled from the factory, such as video display while driving and warning signal behaviour. Available for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Toyota and Honda.
Secure network access:
- FCA Secure Gateway: Opens the protected gateway of Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Alfa Romeo and Maserati from model year 2017 onwards, after which fault code clearing, actuation and calibration become available again. Requires separate authorisation.
- Renault Secure Gateway: Provides access to the secure diagnostic port of recent Renault, Dacia and RSM models. Separate authorisation is also required here.
- VAG SFD: Unlocks the control units of Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat protected by SFD for coding and actuation.
- Nissan Secure Gateway: Opens the secure port of recent Nissan models.
Vehicle identification and scan methods:
- Automatic vehicle identification: Reads the VIN from the control unit and loads the correct diagnostic software accordingly, without manually navigating through brand, model and build year.
- VIN scanning with camera: Captures the barcode of the chassis number using the built-in camera. If the code cannot be read, the number can still be entered manually.
- Quick scan: Scans the vehicle in a short time and provides a health overview: which systems are present and where fault codes are stored.
- Full system scan: Checks each available system individually for a complete picture before repair work begins.
- Targeted scan: Opens a single manually selected control unit, useful when the fault has already been narrowed down to one system.
- Ten OBD modes: Supports the complete statutory OBD package, including stored and pending codes, live data, oxygen sensor tests and emissions control readiness.
Measurement and recording:
- Snapshot at fault occurrence: Saves the measured values as they were at the moment the fault code was cleared, allowing the circumstances to be assessed afterwards.
- Record and playback live data: Records a series of measured values during a test drive and plays them back frame by frame afterwards. Brief deviations that cannot be detected while driving are revealed this way.
- Compare with a reference: Compare recorded values alongside a previously saved reading from a vehicle in good working order.
- Screenshot and print function: Captures the display as a video or image, useful for preserving a measurement or presenting it to a colleague or supplier.
Reporting and workshop administration:
- Diagnostic report: Records the session in a report before and after repair, including vehicle data, fault codes found and actions taken. Can be saved and shared.
- Workshop details on the report: Adds your company name and details to the report, allowing it to be issued as your own document to the customer.
- Customer management: Stores customer and vehicle information alongside completed diagnostics.
- History: Maintains all previous sessions per vehicle with associated data, enabling you to compare recurring issues against earlier readings.
Support and reference:
- Remote assistance: Grants a remote technician access to the device screen to observe a complex diagnosis in real time.
- Feedback to manufacturer: Sends the latest twenty test reports when a vehicle is not recognised correctly or a function fails, allowing the software issue to be resolved.
- Repair data: Provides access to factory data for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche from 2011 onwards.
- Fault code library: Stores the meaning of OBD fault codes, searchable even without a vehicle connected.
- Coverage list: Shows which systems and functions are actually available per make and model, allowing you to check before the vehicle arrives.

Device management:
- One-step updates: Updates all selected vehicle software and the app in a single operation over WiFi, directly on the device.
- VCI maintenance: Activates the MDCI Pro and restores the module firmware or system if needed from the device itself.

- Phoenix ADAS calibration system: Tripod with alignment panels for calibrating adaptive cruise control, emergency braking assistance, lane departure warning and correction, night vision, rear traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. - TC001 thermal imaging camera: Visualises temperature variations: a brake calliper that continues to bind, a radiator with localised cold spots, a heated rear window with an interruption, a control unit running too hot.

Licence information:
Included with the Topdon Phoenix Max is a software licence. The following terms apply to the duration and renewal thereof.
- Includes 24 months of updates: The licence for cars and light commercial vehicles runs for 24 months from activation of the device.
- Annual renewal: After that, the licence can be renewed using the device serial number. View the update licence.
When the licence expires, the device continues to operate on the last installed software version and system and app updates continue to be received normally. Vehicles that are only included in a newer software version and functions that require server connectivity, including online programming, will no longer be available.
