The Topdon VAG SFD Authorization License is a digital software authorization that grants technicians access to the secure diagnostic systems of recent vehicles from the Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG). This license is specifically designed to unlock the Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose (SFD), the security gateway used by the manufacturer to prevent unauthorized changes to ECUs. The license is valid for one year and is essential for performing advanced diagnostic procedures, coding, and adjustments on models equipped with this technology.
Technically, the license functions as a digital key used via the Topdon diagnostic device. When the device connects to an ECU protected by SFD, the software sends an authorization request to the Topdon servers. These servers then communicate with the official VAG OEM backend to obtain a one-time unlock token. This token is sent to the vehicle, after which the ECU is temporarily released for diagnosis and adjustments. After the license period expires, access to the SFD servers is blocked, and renewal is required to maintain functionality.

This license activates the necessary authorization protocols in your Topdon diagnostic device to communicate with SFD-protected systems. The features become available immediately after activation.
- SFD authorization and unlocking: Allows unlocking a secured ECU. After identifying an SFD module, the system automatically requests online authorization, after which the module is released for further operations.
- Coding and adjustments: After a successful SFD unlock, coding, adjustments, and parameterization can be performed on the respective ECU, such as learning new components or modifying vehicle settings.
- Performing actuator tests: Enables control of specific components managed by an SFD-protected module. This is necessary for accurate system diagnosis.
- Service and maintenance functions: Provides access to service-related tasks such as resetting service intervals, performing basic settings, or calibrating systems behind the SFD protection.

The license is developed for vehicles within the VAG group equipped with the SFD security protocol. This generally applies to models from around the 2020 model year onward.
- Audi: Support for models such as the A3 (8Y), Q4 e-tron, and other recent platforms.
- Volkswagen: Compatible with models like the Golf 8, ID.3, ID.4, and Caddy V.
- SEAT: Support for models such as the Leon (KL), Tarraco, and Ateca post-facelift.
- Škoda: Compatible with models such as the Octavia IV, Enyaq iV, and Fabia IV.

How Does It Work in Practice?
Activation of the SFD license is a fully digital process linked to the serial number of your Topdon device.
- Order: Place the order for the license and enter the 12-digit serial number of your Topdon device during the ordering process.
- Digital linking: The license is remotely linked by the manufacturer to the serial number you provided. This process is irreversible.
- Activation process: Processing and activation of the license typically take 7 business days after ordering. You will not receive a physical product.
- Usage: Once the license is active, you can update your Topdon device via the software. When accessing an SFD-protected module, the device will automatically request and obtain authorization.
Serial Number Information
The serial number of your Topdon device is required for license activation and must be entered correctly when ordering. The 12-digit number can be found in the following locations:
- Interface/VCI: Usually found on a sticker on the back of the VCI module.
- Software menu: Navigate in the tablet software to the settings, profile, or info menu to read the serial number digitally.
- Packaging: The serial number is often printed on the original product box.
