The Topdon FCA (SGW) Authorization License is a digital authorization that grants technicians access for a period of one year to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) vehicles secured with a Security Gateway (SGW). This license is specifically designed to bypass the security module, enabling more than just basic diagnostics. Without this authorization, communication with many important ECUs is limited to passive data reading. The license unlocks the ability to perform active tests, calibrations, and codings on protected systems.
The activation process of the FCA authorization is fully automatic after purchase and linking to the serial number of the Topdon diagnostic device. When the technician connects a compatible FCA vehicle, the Topdon software will independently connect to the OEM servers of FCA to complete the authentication. This requires an active internet connection at the time of diagnosis. Once the authorization is verified, the SGW is unlocked and all supported diagnostic actions can be performed. After the license period of one year expires, access to these secured functions will be revoked.

How does it work in practice?
Activating and using the FCA license follows a streamlined process that is largely automated.
- Purchase and linking: After purchase, the license is digitally linked to the serial number of your Topdon device.
- Update software: Make sure your Topdon diagnostic software is updated to the latest version.
- Connect vehicle: Connect the diagnostic device to an SGW-protected FCA vehicle.
- Automatic authentication: The software detects the SGW and automatically initiates online authentication to unlock the systems.
Serial number information
The serial number of your Topdon diagnostic device is required for activation. This number can be found in various locations.
- Software settings: Within the 'Info' or 'Settings' menu of the Topdon device.
- Physical sticker: Usually on the back of the VCI dongle or the diagnostic tablet.
- Original packaging: Often found on a label on the outside of the box.
