The Topdon FCA (SGW) Authorization License is a digital software license valid for one year. This license grants authorized access to the Security Gateway (SGW) protocol used in recent vehicles from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group. The purpose of the SGW is to secure vehicle electronics against unauthorized access. With this license, it becomes possible to perform secured diagnostic functions that would otherwise be blocked.
Technically, the license functions as a digital key linked to the serial number of the Topdon diagnostic device. When the device connects to a vehicle equipped with an SGW, the software initiates an authorization request. Through an active internet connection, the device communicates with the Topdon server, which in turn handles authentication with the official FCA server. After successful verification, the SGW is temporarily unlocked, allowing the technician full access to the ECUs for diagnostics and adjustments. After the license expires, access to the secured systems is blocked and renewal is necessary to maintain functionality.
Applications and Features
This license unlocks access to secured electronic control units (ECUs), enabling the following diagnostic actions:
- Clear fault codes: Allows deletion of stored and active fault codes (DTCs) from secured modules such as the engine control unit, ABS, and airbag.
- Test actuators: Provides the ability to directly control components and systems to verify proper operation, such as testing injectors, fans, or valves.
- Perform special functions: Grants access to advanced service functions, including resetting service intervals, regenerating diesel particulate filters (DPF), and calibrating sensors.
- Coding and adjustments: Allows performing codings, such as adjusting vehicle configurations or learning new components after replacement.
Compatible Vehicles
The FCA (SGW) Authorization License is designed for vehicles from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group equipped with a Security Gateway module, generally from model year 2017 onward. This includes, among others, the following brands:
- Fiat: Support for models with SGW.
- Alfa Romeo: Support for models such as the Giulia and Stelvio.
- Jeep: Support for models such as the Renegade, Compass, and Wrangler (JL).
- Chrysler: Support for models with SGW.
- Dodge: Support for models with SGW.
- RAM: Support for recent models with SGW.
Compatible Devices
This license is compatible with Topdon diagnostic devices that support SGW functionality. This includes, among others, the following models:
- Topdon Phoenix Series: Including the Phoenix, Phoenix Lite, Phoenix Plus, Phoenix Smart, Phoenix Elite, and Phoenix Max.

💡 Tip: A stable internet connection on the Topdon diagnostic device is required for authorization. Communication with the FCA server is handled via Topdon, so a separate FCA account is not necessary.
How Does It Work in Practice?
Activating and using the license is done through a digital process.
- Place order: During the ordering process, enter the 12-digit serial number of your Topdon diagnostic device in the designated field.
- Digital activation: After ordering, the license is digitally linked to the provided serial number. This process usually takes about 7 business days. No physical code or product is shipped.
- Update software: Ensure your Topdon device software is fully updated. The license will be automatically activated after the update.
- Perform diagnostics: Connect the diagnostic device to a compatible FCA vehicle. The software will automatically detect the presence of the SGW and, with an active internet connection, start the authorization process to gain access.
Serial Number Information
The serial number (12 characters) of your Topdon device is required for license activation and must be entered when ordering.
- Device: The serial number is usually on a sticker on the back of the tablet.
- Menu: In the software menu, the serial number can be found under 'Settings' or 'User Info'.
- Packaging: The serial number is also printed on the original packaging of the device.
