The OBDSTAR TCM-012 is an Adapter Cable designed for direct connection of a diagnostic programmer to the Siemens VGS2-NAG2 and VGS3-NAG2 transmission control units (TCM). These TCM variants are used in the Mercedes-Benz 722.9 7G-Tronic automatic and are recognizable by their 6-pin TCM connector. The cable ends in a 15-pin DB15 connector on the device side and is exclusively compatible with OBDSTAR readers or programmers.

The Adapter Cable enables a direct bench connection between the OBDSTAR programmer and the detached or installed TCM, without using the vehicle's OBD port. Via the 6-pin TCM side, the control unit is powered and the diagnostic and programming protocols required for reading or rewriting the transmission data are transferred. The DB15 connector on the other side connects directly to the corresponding port of the OBDSTAR device, allowing signal transmission without additional adapters. This method is mainly used for TCM replacement, data recovery, or adaptation reset of the 7G-Tronic transmission control unit.

CAUTIONS

Only suitable for TCMs with a 6-pin Siemens VGS2-NAG2 or VGS3-NAG2 connector; other transmission control units or connector types are not supported.
The Adapter Cable is exclusively compatible with OBDSTAR readers or programmers and does not work with diagnostic hardware from other manufacturers.
An external power source is required for correct operation during bench use, as the TCM does not receive its own power outside the vehicle.

Applications and Features

The TCM-012 supports the following diagnostic functions on the Siemens VGS2-NAG2 and VGS3-NAG2 transmission control units via an OBDSTAR programmer:

  • TCM programming: Overwriting or reprogramming the transmission control unit, used during TCM replacement or restoring factory data.
  • Adaptation reset: Clearing stored transmission adaptations in the TCM, after which the 7G-Tronic performs a new learning sequence for shift characteristics.
  • Data reading: Reading the current TCM configuration, software version, and stored parameter data for diagnosis or archiving before replacement.
  • Bench mode operation: Establishing a direct connection with the detached TCM outside the vehicle, without using the vehicle's OBD port.
