The Autool PT610 is a digital compression tester with a measurement range of 0 to 29.4 bar. The PT610 measures the compression pressure of a petrol engine via the spark plug hole. Unlike the rest of the range, it stores the value for each cylinder, from CYL1 to CYL6, and calculates the average. This lets you see at a glance which cylinder stands out – which is the whole point of a compression test.
The device provides digital readouts and records the highest and lowest values during measurement, along with the difference between them and the measurement duration. Connection is made using the included adapters: ten adapter types. A high-pressure hose and rubber hose, both with safety locks, a curved and straight test hose with rubber stopper, and threaded adapters M18×1.5, M16×1.5, M14×1.25, M12×1.25 and M10×1.0, made from riveted copper.

Application and functionality
A compression test indicates the mechanical condition of the cylinder: piston rings, valves and head gasket together. The result is not the absolute value, but the difference between cylinders. The PT610 therefore records each cylinder separately, from CYL1 to CYL6, and displays the average alongside.
The measurement functions are designed to compare cylinders with one another:
- Storage per cylinder: CYL1 through CYL6, so you can compare them side by side.
- Average pressure: The tester automatically calculates the average of the measured cylinders.
- Temperature readout: In degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit, alongside the pressure value.
- Test duration: How long the measurement runs, so you test each cylinder for the same length of time.
- Four units: Bar, kg/cm² and psi, with temperature in °C or °F.
Where to connect it
The spark plug hole. The adapter fits in place of the spark plug, with the thread that matches your engine.
How to perform the measurement
The sequence determines whether the measurement is worthwhile. This is the procedure Autool prescribes in the manual.
- Bring the engine to operating temperature: A cold engine gives a lower and unreliable reading.
- Remove spark plugs and cut fuel supply: Remove all spark plugs and cut off the fuel supply so the engine won't start.
- Throttle fully open: Keep your foot on the accelerator; otherwise the cylinder won't get enough air and you'll read too low.
- Crank the starter motor for three to five seconds: At 100 to 150 rpm, then read the value. Repeat for each cylinder.
Where to use it
A compression test is the quickest way to an answer in these situations:
- Engine running rough: See which cylinder is underperforming by comparing it to the average.
- Pre-purchase inspection: Engine condition in figures rather than by ear.
- After an overhaul or head gasket job: Verify that cylinders are balanced again.
- Two low cylinders side by side: A pattern that points to the head gasket rather than the valves.
Which pressure gauge you need
Autool offers seven pressure testers that look similar from the outside but have a different sensor and different adapter set. The difference lies in which system you're testing and how high the pressure goes. You're currently viewing the PT610.
