The Autool PT650 is a digital transmission fluid pressure tester for automatic transmissions with a measurement range of 0 to 29.4 bar. The PT650 measures oil pressure in an automatic transmission at the main pressure port of the gearbox housing. When a transmission shudders or slips, this measurement tells you whether the pump and control system deliver the pressure they should – saving you from opening the gearbox to investigate.

The instrument displays readings digitally and records the highest and lowest values during measurement, along with the difference between them and the duration of the test. Connection is made using the supplied adapters: twelve adapter types. With the thread sizes found on automatic transmissions: NPT 1/4″ and 3/8″, 1/8″-28 in male and female, M8×1.0 and M10×1.0, plus an oil-resistant extension hose. It runs on four AAA batteries and operates from −10 to +60 °C.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Overload protection up to 40 bar. Beyond this, the sensor will be damaged.
✕Measurements are taken with the engine running. Keep the hose clear of the exhaust and rotating components.
✕The adapters are universal, not brand-specific. Which you need depends on the vehicle; if unsure, provide the make, model and year.
✕Powered by four AAA batteries. These are user-replaceable, but note that the tester will switch off automatically after five minutes.

Application and functionality

A pressure tester tells you whether a system delivers the pressure it should. That's the difference between guesswork and measurement – and it avoids replacing components that are working correctly.

Where to connect it

  • The main pressure port: On the automatic transmission housing; which adapter you need depends on the manufacturer.

What you see on the display

  • Live pressure reading: The current pressure at that moment.
  • Highest and lowest values: Pmax and Pmin are recorded during the measurement.
  • Difference between them: ΔP, the difference between the highest and lowest value.
  • Measurement duration: How long the test has been running.
  • Transmission adapters: NPT and 1/8″-28 thread sizes not typically found on engine blocks.

How to perform the measurement

The sequence determines whether the measurement is valid. This is the procedure that Autool specifies in the manual.

  1. Bring the transmission to operating temperature: Cold ATF produces different pressure than fluid at operating temperature.
  2. Remove the main pressure port plug: Unscrew the plug from the housing and thread in the matching adapter.
  3. Connect the tester: Position the hose so it stays clear of the exhaust and drivetrain.
  4. Run the engine and select gears: Read the pressure in different positions; Pmax, Pmin and the difference are recorded.

Which pressure tester you need

Autool offers seven pressure testers that look similar externally but have different sensors and adapter sets. The difference lies in which system you're measuring and how high the pressure rises in that system. You're currently viewing the PT650.

Helpful tip: Record the measured value together with the conditions: Engine temperature, engine speed and which adapter you used. A pressure reading without that context cannot be compared with a repeat measurement three months later, and often the trend tells you more than a single measurement.
