The Tesla 12-pin to 16-pin adapter cable is a specialized diagnostic adapter specifically designed for the first generations of the Tesla Model S and Model X. Unlike traditional vehicles, these models do not have a standard OBD2 diagnostic port, but a 12-pin Tesla-specific connector, usually located behind the central display (MCU).
This adapter functions as an essential "pass-through" bridge between the Tesla 12-pin port and a standard 16-pin OBD2 scanner. This allows owners and specialized technicians to monitor extensive vehicle data via a suitable dongle (such as OBDLink LX/MX+) and associated software (such as Scan My Tesla). The cable is designed for interference-free CAN bus communication.
Application and functionality:
This adapter cable enables access to extensive live vehicle data via a compatible OBD2 interface from, among others:
- Battery: cell voltages, charge rates, temperatures, State of Health
- Drivetrain: real-time torque, RPM, and engine performance
- Vehicle sensors: temperature, consumption, suspension, HVAC, etc.
This information is much more detailed than what is displayed on the standard dashboard. The location of the port behind the MCU requires some disassembly.
Compatible with the following vehicle makes and models:
This adapter cable is exclusively compatible with Tesla vehicles equipped with a 12-pin diagnostic port. Supported models are:
- Tesla Model S: produced from 2012 to approximately February 2015
- Tesla Model X: produced from 2015 to approximately February 2015
For models produced after this period, a 20-pin or 26-pin connector is usually required.
