The Honda 3-pin OBD1 to 16-pin OBD2 adapter cable is specifically designed to connect older vehicles with a brand-specific diagnostic port to modern diagnostic equipment. This adapter allows a diagnostic tester with a standard 16-pin OBD2 plug to connect to the 3-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) found in various Honda models produced before the introduction of the OBD2 standard.

The cable facilitates data transfer via the car’s communication lines to the diagnostic device interface by converting the unique pin configuration of the 3-pin connector to the universal OBD2 layout. It is a passive component that ensures physical connectivity of power, ground, and data lines. For successful diagnosis, the connected scanner must be software compatible with the older, brand-specific Honda protocol.

ADVANTAGES

Enables connection of modern equipment to the older 3-pin port.
Robust construction with molded connectors for stable signal transmission.
Plug-and-play design requiring no external power supply.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Does not convert protocols; the scanner must be OBD1-compatible.
Not suitable for Honda models using the 5-pin connector.

Applications and functionalities

This adapter cable is essential for workshops servicing older Honda vehicles. The adapter acts as an interface between the car and the diagnostic equipment.

  • Physical conversion: Converts the Honda-specific 3-pin connector to a standard OBD2 connector.
  • Reading fault codes: Allows access to the ECU for reading and clearing DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
  • Live data display: Supports reading sensor values if the diagnostic scanner supports this protocol.

Compatible vehicles and applications

This adapter is suitable for most Honda vehicles produced between approximately 1992 and 2001 that are not equipped with the standard 16-pin OBD2 port but do have the 3-pin diagnostic connector.

Honda:

  • Accord: (1992 - 1997)
  • Civic: (1992 - 2000)
  • CR-V: (1997 - 2001)
  • Del Sol: (1993 - 1997)
  • Integra: (1994 - 2001)
  • Odyssey: (1995 - 1998)
  • Prelude: (1992 - 2001)
💡
Good to know: The 3-pin diagnostic port is located in many older Honda models under the glove compartment on the passenger side or behind the center console near the floor. Sometimes the connector hangs loose in a green rubber holder.
