The OBDSTAR M009 connects the 4-pin factory diagnostic port on Kawasaki motorcycles to a standard 16-pin OBD2 connector (J1962). This allows you to connect a motorcycle without a built-in OBD2 port to your OBDSTAR programmer.

The cable translates the pin layout from the 4-pin port to the 16-pin configuration that OBDSTAR equipment recognises. The signal lines, including the K-line which many Kawasaki motorcycles use for serial data communication, are routed to the correct pin positions on the OBD2 connector. What you can subsequently do with the engine management system depends on the capabilities of your own device and the ECU software of the model. The cable itself does not add any coverage.

ADVANTAGES

Direct connection to the 4-pin port — no intermediate adapters needed between motorcycle and equipment.
Correct K-line routing — the signal lines connect to the corresponding pins on the J1962 connector.
Short cable for tight spaces — the compact length works well around the diagnostic port on a motorcycle.
Verified model list — the product information lists eleven Kawasaki models with this connector, including model years.

LIMITATIONS

Not for models with an OBD2 port — Kawasaki motorcycles with a standard 16-pin connector do not need this cable.
Not for other factory connectors — a different cable from the range is required for 4+4-pin, 6-pin or 8-pin configurations.
OBDSTAR equipment only — use with diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers is not supported.
Does not add vehicle coverage — available functions depend on your device and the ECU software of the model.

Applications and functionality

Via the 4-pin port you can access the engine control unit of the Kawasaki.

Control units you can reach

  • Engine control unit (ECU): The control module communicating via K-line.
  • Other modules: The source confirms only the engine management system on this port; further modules depend on model and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: Retrieve stored and active diagnostic trouble codes, including data on the affected system.
  • Clear fault codes: Remove codes from the engine control unit memory after diagnosis and repair.
  • Display live data: Monitor values such as engine speed, temperature and throttle position on the diagnostic device.
  • Request ECU identification: Read the software version and identification data of the engine management unit.
  • Please note: Which functions work depends on your OBDSTAR device and the ECU software of the model.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The 4-pin diagnostic port is what matters, not the model or year of manufacture. The Kawasaki models listed below are equipped with that connector; only confirmed models are included. If in doubt, check the connector on the motorcycle itself first.

Kawasaki:

  • ER-6n / ER-6f: (2012–2016)
  • Ninja 300 (EX300): (2013–2017)
  • Ninja 400 (EX400): (2018–present)
  • Ninja 650 (EX650): (2012–present)
  • Ninja 1000 (ZX-10R / Z1000SX): (2011–present)
  • Versys 650: (2015–present)
  • Versys 1000: (2012–present)
  • Z650: (2017–present)
  • Z800: (2013–2016)
  • Z900: (2017–present)
  • Z1000: (2010–present)
💡
Good to know: The 4-pin diagnostic port is typically located beneath the side panels or seat; consult your model's workshop manual for the exact port location. Before ordering, verify that the connector has four pins, as a 6-pin or 8-pin port requires a different cable.
