The OBDSTAR M040 is the adapter cable for the round 10-pin diagnostic port found on BMW motorcycles. On the vehicle side, it features a cylindrical connector with ten pins; on the device side, a standard 16-pin OBD2 (J1962)-connector to which you connect your diagnostic scanner.

BMW retained this round connector on its motorcycles for many years, at a time when the automotive OBD2 connector was not yet standard on two-wheelers. Depending on model and year of manufacture, communication runs via the K-line or via the CAN-bus. The cable contains no active electronics: the signal lines are routed directly through the connector, so the cable functions purely as a passive pin translator. Through this connection, you access the engine control unit and other systems connected to the diagnostic bus. Which functions and protocols are available depends on your specific model and year of manufacture and is determined by your own device's software; the cable itself adds no additional protocol support.

KEY BENEFITS

Broad model coverage within a single connector type — From the R 1150 series from 2000 through to later F-, G- and K-models with the same round port.
Passive signal routing — With no active electronics in the cable, no additional power supply or configuration is required.
Supports both K-line and CAN-bus — The lines that BMW uses on this port pass through unchanged to your diagnostic scanner.
Genuine OBDSTAR accessory — Designed for OBDSTAR's own motorcycle diagnostic tools such as the MS50, MS70 and MotoMaster.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Not for BMW cars — The round 10-pin port is a motorcycle connection; BMW automobiles fall outside the scope of this product.
Available features vary by model year— Whether communication occurs via K-line or via CAN-bus depends on the specific model.
Exclusively for OBDSTAR equipment — The cable is not compatible with diagnostic systems from other manufacturers.
Does not add vehicle coverage— What you can read or write is determined by the software on your own device.

Applications and features

Via this connection, you can access the electronic systems connected to the motorcycle's 10-pin diagnostic bus.

Control units you can access

  • Motor control unit (ECU):The engine management control unit connected to the 10-pin port.
  • Other electronic systems:Which additional modules are accessible varies depending on the model and year of manufacture.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes:Retrieve stored fault codes (DTCs) from the engine control unit and other connected systems.
  • Clear fault codes:The fault memory can be cleared once the fault has been resolved.
  • Live data viewing:Read live sensor values and parameters whilst stationary or in operation.
  • ECU identification reading:Retrieve vehicle and system data, including ECU version and vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Actuator control:Control components via the diagnostic software for testing purposes, depending on the system support of the OBDSTAR device.
  • Please note:The available feature set varies depending on the model, production year and OBDSTAR device.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The round 10-pin diagnostic port is what matters, not the model. The BMW motorcycles listed below are equipped with this port. When the model changed, the manufacturer may have switched to a different connector, so if in doubt, first check the socket on the motorcycle itself.

💡
Good to know:The 10-pin diagnostic port on BMW motorcycles is typically located beneath the seat or near the frame; the exact position varies by model and year of manufacture. Before ordering, verify that your motorcycle has the round 10-pin port and not the 16-pin OBD2 port.
