The BMW K+DCAN OBD2 - USB Switch | Interface Cable (Blue) is a diagnostic cable designed for communication between BMW E-series vehicles and external diagnostic systems. The cable is equipped with a standard 16-pin OBD2 connector on the vehicle side and a USB-A interface for connection to a computer. This physical connection facilitates data streams necessary for in-depth diagnostics, reading complex parameters, and performing specific coding and programming of electronic control units (ECUs).

Within the vehicle's communication network, this interface cable acts as a bridge between different factory-specific protocols. The built-in switch allows the user to physically connect (bridge) or separate the connection between pin 7 and pin 8 on the OBD2 plug. This is an absolute technical requirement: connected pins activate dual K-Line communication for older models (built up to around 2007), while separated pins enable fast D-CAN communication (500 kbit/s) for newer production years. This ensures the hardware interacts at the correct protocol level with specialized diagnostic software, providing stable data transfer during use.

ADVANTAGES

Integrated physical switch for bridging and separating pin 7 and 8.
Supports data transfer via both K-Line and the newer D-CAN protocol.
Fully compatible with the OEM standard EDIABAS network architecture.
Enables direct, offline ECU coding without reliance on cloud servers.

KEY POINTS

Technically not compatible with vehicles requiring the ENET protocol (F and G series).
No automatic protocol recognition; the switch requires manual operation based on the model year.
Successful use strongly depends on the correct configuration of the virtual COM port.
Diagnostic software is not included by default with the interface cable.

Applications and functionalities

This interface cable facilitates basic diagnostic functions and maintenance tasks when combined with compatible diagnostic software.

  • Reading and clearing fault codes: Full network access to all vehicle modules (such as DME, DSC, and CAS) for scanning, identifying, and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Monitoring live data: Reading sensor data and actuators in real time, including injection times, turbo pressure, engine temperature, and ignition values, to support targeted troubleshooting.
  • Performing actuator tests: Bidirectionally controlling specific vehicle components (such as fuel pumps, cooling fans, or relays) to check the physical operation and response time of the part.
  • Resetting service intervals: Resetting the Condition Based Service (CBS) values after performing physical maintenance tasks, such as oil changes or brake pad replacements.

Special features and capabilities

For advanced users and diagnostic technicians, the cable, combined with specialized software tools, provides access to in-depth technical modifications and repairs.

  • Module coding: Adjusting factory-set vehicle configurations and activating specific functions in control units (such as lighting parameters or alarm settings).
  • ECU flashing and updating: Programming and overwriting the binary files on control units to provide them with newer or modified software versions.
  • Immobilizer synchronization: Performing necessary synchronization processes (such as EWS/CAS to DME/DDE alignment) to resolve starting issues after replacing electronic components.
  • Learning adaptations: Registering the discharge profiles of a new battery in the power management system, or resetting the learned values of automatic transmissions.

Compatible vehicles

The BMW K+DCAN interface cable is exclusively designed for BMW and MINI vehicles from the so-called E-series architecture. The following chassis generations are supported.

BMW:

  • 1-series: E81, E82, E87, E88
  • 3-series: E36 (with Adapter), E46, E90, E91, E92, E93
  • 5-series: E39, E60, E61
  • 6-series: E63, E64
  • 7-series: E38, E65, E66
  • X-series: E84 (X1), E83 (X3), E53 / E70 (X5), E71 (X6)
  • Z-series: E85, E86, E89 (Z4)

MINI:

  • MINI: R50, R52, R53, R55, R56, R57

Compatible software and operating systems

The cable functions as a pass-through and is fully dependent on Windows-based software applications for operation and analysis.

Compatible software:

  • INPA: For quick factory-specific diagnostics and extensive live data analysis.
  • ISTA-D / Rheingold: For in-depth diagnostics, service functions, and interactive fault-finding guides (dealer-level).
  • NCS Expert: For coding parameters and configuring vehicle modules (part of BMW Standard Tools).
  • WinKFP: For flashing (updating) software files on individual control units.
  • Tool32: For performing low-level jobs and direct access to the EDIABAS server structure.

Operating systems:

  • Windows: Fully compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 (requires FTDI drivers for virtual serial port).
💡
Good to know: Set the USB serial port to COM1 in Windows Device Manager and reduce the latency timer to 1 ms. This prevents timeouts and communication errors with the diagnostic software.
