The BMW ENET OBD2 - RJ45 interface cable is designed for direct broadband communication between the vehicle and an external diagnostic system or computer. This interface cable uses a standard 16-pin OBD2 connector on the vehicle side and an RJ45 network plug for connection to an external system. The cable is specifically developed for advanced technical applications, including in-depth diagnostics, coding control units, and programming or flashing modules in newer vehicle platforms.
Technically, the interface cable acts as a physical bridge for Ethernet communication via the diagnostic port, which is required for vehicles with a DoIP architecture (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol). Because data transfer occurs via the ENET protocol, significantly higher bandwidths are achieved compared to traditional CAN bus networks. This makes the cable essential for flawless and fast transfer of large files between vehicle modules and diagnostic software. The direct, wired connection provides the stability necessary during critical programming sessions where data loss or latency could lead to corrupted control units.
ADVANTAGES
KEY POINTS
Applications and functionalities
The interface cable enables technicians to perform advanced operations within vehicle electronics, provided it is combined with the appropriate software packages.
- FDL Coding: Adjusting vehicle configurations (Flash Data List) to activate hidden factory options or customize comfort features in the control units.
- ECU Flashing: Overwriting the software on engine or transmission control units with new data maps for tuning or firmware updates.
- Reading and Clearing Fault Codes: In-depth communication with all present modules to read, analyze, and clear DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
- Service Interval Reset: Controls the onboard computer to reset maintenance messages and service indicators after physical maintenance.
Special features and capabilities
This cable is designed around the specific network architecture of modern vehicles, resulting in targeted technical capabilities.
- DoIP support: Enables Diagnostics over Internet Protocol, allowing large amounts of diagnostic data to be transmitted over the network in fractions of a second.
- Passive Signal Transmission: Utilizes the vehicle’s internal network controller. The cable contains no active translation chips, minimizing latency.
- Direct Ethernet Mapping: Directly routes the OBD pins (specifically TX/RX and activation pins) to the correct twisted-pair wires within the RJ45 connector for seamless network synchronization.
Compatible vehicles
This network cable is only suitable for vehicles equipped with Ethernet over OBD, generally from model year 2008/2009 and newer.
BMW:
- F-Series: (F01, F02, F10, F11, F20, F21, F30, F31, F80, etc.)
- G-Series: (G20, G21, G30, G31, G01, G05, etc.)
- I-Series: (i3, i8, i4, iX)
MINI:
- F-Series: (F54, F55, F56, F57, F60)
Compatible software and operating systems
The cable functions as passive hardware. Specific external software supporting the ENET protocol is required to perform tasks.
Compatible software:
- E-Sys: For engineering, FDL coding, and flashing control units.
- ISTA+ / ISTA-D: For dealer-level diagnostics, measured values, and schematics.
- Bootmod3 / xHP Flashtool: For flashing engine and transmission software (tuning).
- BimmerCode / BimmerLink: For mobile coding and diagnostics (requires an external RJ45-to-smartphone Adapter in this case).
Operating systems:
- Windows: Fully supported (Windows 10 / Windows 11 required for ISTA and E-Sys).
