The Galletto 1260 is a specialized interface cable designed for chiptuning and reprogramming the ECU via the OBD2 connection. This cable handles the physical and digital communication between the vehicle’s engine control unit and an external system, such as a PC or laptop, via a standard USB-A interface. The system is specifically used for reading original engine software and writing optimized calibration data (flashing) without needing to disassemble the unit.

Technically, the interface cable functions as a bridge between the diagnostic software and the vehicle’s internal network, primarily using the K-Line protocol within the EOBD standard. During data transfer, the internal FTDI chip communicates with the EEPROM or flash memory of the control unit to read or overwrite binary files. In practice, this allows tuners and diagnostic technicians to adjust engine parameters such as injection timing and fuel mixture via a direct serial connection without soldering on the circuit board.

The Galletto 1260 interface cable is exclusively designed for accessing the memory of the engine control unit for reprogramming purposes. The cable offers the following core functionalities in combination with the associated software:

  • Firmware Reading: Downloading the current binary (.bin) file, including fuel maps and settings, from the ECU to an external computer for analysis or backup.
  • Firmware Writing: Uploading (flashing) a new, customized binary file to the ECU to replace the original parameters, mainly used in chip tuning.
  • Connection Testing: Establishing a serial connection via K-Line to identify the status and hardware number of the connected engine control unit before flashing.

Special features and capabilities

Although it is an interface for older generation vehicles, this specific cable offers features that simplify complex procedures:

  • OBD2 Direct Flash: The ability to overwrite the flash memory via the standard diagnostic connector inside the vehicle, eliminating the need to remove the ECU and open it on a bench (BDM).
  • EDC15 & EDC16 Integration: Standard optimized for read and write access to common Bosch diesel control units widely used in the early 2000s.

The cable functions as a 'pass-through' communication device and is fully dependent on the correct serial drivers and flash software to perform operations.

  • Galletto 1260 Flasher: Standard diagnostic software for reading, identifying, and flashing binary files.
  • Tuning & Checksum software: External programs (such as WinOLS) required for adjusting data and correcting checksums before the file is written via Galletto.

Operating systems:

  • Windows: Designed for Windows XP and Windows 7 (32-bit strongly recommended). Operation on Windows 10/11 often requires manual installation of legacy FTDI drivers via device manager.

Good to know: Always use a stabilized battery charger on the vehicle's battery and connect the laptop to mains power during flashing to prevent data corruption and irreversible ECU damage due to voltage drops.
