The Autool PT640 GDI is a digital fuel pressure tester for direct injection with a measurement range of 0 to 360 bar. The PT640 GDI measures the high pressure that the fuel pump of a direct injection system builds up, up to 360 bar. This is a different world from a conventional injection system, and therefore requires a different sensor. Above 355 bar the device emits a sound alarm.

The device reads digitally and during measurement records the highest and lowest values, along with the difference between them and the duration of the measurement. Connection is made with the supplied adapters: three adapter types. It runs on four AAA batteries and is usable from −10 to +60 °C.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Release pressure from the system first. The manual specifies this: switch off the pump, let the engine stop, disconnect the battery. Fuel under this pressure is dangerous.
✕Not intended for low-pressure systems. With a resolution of 0.1 bar, it reads a conventional injection system more coarsely than the PT630.
✕The adapters are universal, not brand-specific. Which ones you need depends on the vehicle; if in doubt, provide the make, model and year of manufacture.
✕Runs on four AAA batteries. These are user-replaceable, but note that the tester automatically shuts off after five minutes.

Application and functionality

A pressure tester tells you whether a system achieves the pressure it should. That's the difference between guesswork and measurement – and it saves replacing components that have nothing wrong with them.

Where to connect it

  • The high-pressure line of the GDI system: Between the high-pressure pump and the rail, with the adapter that fits your system.

What you see on the screen

  • Live measurement value: The pressure as it is at that moment.
  • Highest and lowest values: Pmax and Pmin are recorded during measurement.
  • Difference between the two: ΔP, the difference between highest and lowest value.
  • Measurement time: How long the measurement has been running.
  • Alarm above 355 bar: An audible signal before you approach the upper limit of the range.

How to perform the measurement

The sequence determines whether the measurement is valid. This is the procedure specified by Autool in the manual.

  1. Release system pressure: Remove the fuse, relay or connector from the fuel pump.
  2. Let the engine stall: Let it run until it stops naturally, then start it two to three more times to release any residual pressure.
  3. Disconnect the battery: Disconnect the negative terminal before opening the fuel line.
  4. Connect with a cloth underneath: Fuel remains in the line; place a cloth under the connection.

Which pressure tester you need

Autool offers seven pressure testers that look identical from the outside but have different sensors and different adapter sets. The difference lies in which system you are measuring and how high the pressure goes in that system. You are currently viewing the PT640 GDI.

Worth knowing: Record the measured value along with the conditions: engine temperature, engine speed and which adapter you used. A pressure reading without that context cannot be compared with a repeat measurement three months later, and it is often the trend that tells you more than a single reading.
