The Autool PT610 is a digital compression tester with a measurement range of 0 to 29.4 bar. The PT610 measures the compression pressure of a petrol engine via the spark plug hole. Unlike the rest of the range, it stores the value for each cylinder, from CYL1 to CYL6, and calculates the average. This lets you see at a glance which cylinder stands out – which is the whole point of a compression test.

The unit reads digitally and records the highest and lowest values during measurement, along with the difference between them and the test duration. Connection is made using the supplied adapters: Ten adapter types. A high-pressure line and a rubber line, both with safety locks, one angled and one straight test line with rubber cap, and threaded adapters M18×1.5, M16×1.5, M14×1.25, M12×1.25 and M10×1.0, made of riveted copper. It runs on four AAA batteries and is usable from −10 to +60 °C.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕For petrol engines only. The manual describes the measurement procedure for petrol; diesel requires different pressures and different adapters.
✕Overload threshold at 40 bar. Beyond this, the sensor will be damaged.
✕The adapters are universal, not brand-specific. Which ones you need depends on the vehicle; if you're unsure, provide the make, model and year of manufacture.
✕Runs on four AAA batteries. These are replaceable separately, but be aware that the tester will switch itself off after five minutes.

Application and functionality

A pressure tester tells you whether a system achieves the pressure it should. That's the difference between guesswork and measurement – and it saves replacing parts that are actually working fine.

Where to connect it

  • The spark plug hole: The adapter goes in place of the spark plug, with the thread that matches your engine.

What you see on the display

  • Storage per cylinder: CYL1 through CYL6, so you can compare them side by side.
  • Average pressure: The tester automatically calculates the average of the measured cylinders.
  • Temperature readout: In degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit, alongside the pressure value.
  • Test duration: How long the measurement runs, so you test each cylinder for the same length of time.
  • Four units: Bar, kg/cm² and psi, with temperature in °C or °F.

How to perform the test

The procedure determines whether the test is valid. This is the method Autool describes in the manual.

  1. Bring the engine to operating temperature: A cold engine gives a lower and unreliable reading.
  2. Remove spark plugs and cut fuel supply: Remove all spark plugs and cut off the fuel supply so the engine won't start.
  3. Throttle fully open: Keep your foot on the accelerator; otherwise the cylinder won't get enough air and you'll read too low.
  4. Crank the starter motor for three to five seconds: At 100 to 150 rpm, then read the value. Repeat for each cylinder.

Which pressure tester you need

Autool offers seven pressure testers that look similar from the outside but have a different sensor and different adapter set. The difference lies in which system you're testing and how high the pressure goes. You're currently viewing the PT610.

Good to know: Record the measured value together with the conditions: Engine temperature, engine speed and which adapter you used. A pressure reading without that context cannot be compared in a follow-up measurement three months later, and in fact the trend often tells you more than a single reading.
