The Autool PT640 GDI is a digital fuel pressure tester for direct injection with a measurement range of 0 to 360 bar. The PT640 GDI measures the high pressure that the fuel pump of a direct injection system builds up, up to 360 bar. This is a different world from a conventional injection system, and therefore requires a different sensor. Above 355 bar the device emits a sound alarm.
The device provides digital readings and records the maximum and minimum values during measurement, along with the difference between them and the duration of the test. Connection is simple using the included adapters: three adapter types.

Application and functionality
A direct injection system operates at two pressure levels: a low-pressure pump in the fuel tank and a mechanical high-pressure pump that subsequently builds pressure to several hundred bar. The PT640 GDI measures this second level in the high-pressure line between the pump and the fuel rail, allowing you to verify whether the pump achieves the specified rail pressure rather than relying on what the control unit reports.
At these pressures, not only the value matters, but also the upper limit you must not exceed. The device includes these functions:
- Live reading: The pressure at that moment.
- Highest and lowest values: Pmax and Pmin are held throughout the measurement.
- Difference between them: ΔP, the difference between the highest and lowest value.
- Measurement time: How long the measurement has been running.
- Alarm above 355 bar: An audible signal before you approach the upper limit of the range.

How to perform the measurement
The sequence determines whether the measurement is worthwhile. This is the procedure Autool prescribes in the manual.
- Release system pressure: Remove the fuse, relay or connector from the fuel pump.
- Let the engine stall: Let it run until it stops naturally, then start it two to three more times to release any residual pressure.
- Disconnect the battery: Disconnect the negative terminal before opening the fuel line.
- Connect with a cloth underneath: Fuel remains in the line; place a cloth under the connection.
Where to use it
This measurement applies to faults where rail pressure is a factor:
- Starting problems on a direct injection engine: whether the high-pressure pump builds pressure during cranking.
- Fault code relating to fuel pressure: what the pump actually delivers, independent of what the control unit reports.
- Rough running under load: whether the rail pressure holds steady when demand increases.
- After high-pressure pump or pressure regulator valve replacement: verification of built-up pressure before returning the vehicle to the customer.
Which pressure gauge you need
Autool offers seven pressure testers that look identical from the outside but have different sensors and different adapter sets. The difference lies in which system you are measuring and how high the pressure goes in that system. You are currently viewing the PT640 GDI.
