The OBDSTAR M072 is a universal adapter cable that converts a 10-pin OBD connection to a 16-pin OBD2 connector (J1962), specifically designed for diagnostics on motorboats. The cable is designed for use with OBDSTAR readers and programmers and enables connection to inboard engines from brands such as MerCruiser, Crusader Engines, Marine Power, Mercury Racing, PCM, and Volvo Penta. These engines have a 10-pin diagnostic connector that does not directly connect to standard OBD2 equipment.

The M072 adapter cable translates the pin assignment of the 10-pin marine connector to the corresponding pins of the 16-pin OBD2 port, allowing the connected OBDSTAR device to establish diagnostic communication with the engine management electronics. The cable correctly routes the relevant communication lines — including power, ground, and the diagnostic data lines. This enables the reader to read and clear fault codes and request available live data from the engine system. The cable connects directly to the engine’s diagnostic connector on one end and to the OBD2 port of the OBDSTAR device on the other.

ADVANTAGES

Suitable for multiple marine engine brands including MerCruiser, Volvo Penta, and PCM via a single cable type.
Enables direct connection to the 10-pin diagnostic connector of the engine without intermediate wiring.
Correctly translates the pin assignment so that the communication lines for power, ground, and data transfer remain intact.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Only compatible with OBDSTAR readers and programmers; not usable with diagnostic equipment from other brands.
Not suitable for road vehicles or other applications outside marine inboard engines.
The available diagnostic functions depend on the support of the used OBDSTAR device and the specific engine type.

Applications and functionalities

The M072 Adapter Cable supports the following diagnostic functions on compatible marine inboard engines via a connected OBDSTAR device.

  • Read fault codes: The device reads stored and active fault codes (DTCs) from the engine management system of the inboard engine.
  • Clear fault codes: After inspection or repair, the read fault codes can be cleared via the connected OBDSTAR device.
  • Request live data: Real-time parameter data from the engine management system is displayed, such as engine speed, temperatures, and sensor values.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The marine inboard engines listed below have a 10-pin diagnostic connector and are compatible with the OBDSTAR M072 Adapter Cable. Use is only supported with OBDSTAR readers or programmers.
