The Autool TG501 is a paint thickness gauge for steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium. It measures coating thickness from 0 to 2000 µm using magnetic induction on steel and the eddy current principle on non-ferrous metals. In AUTO mode it detects the substrate itself; with MAG and EDDY you select it manually.
Below 100 µm you read off 0.1 µm, with an accuracy of ±(3% + 1 µm). A galvanised substrate is detected separately (3 to 500 µm). The display rotates with the orientation of the device, and up to 80 readings can be stored with a sequence number. This allows you to compare panel by panel and trace overspray and filler.
HIGHLIGHTS
POINTS TO NOTE
Applications and functions
The TG501 is intended for car dealerships, body repair shops, appraisers and private buyers who want to record the coating thickness of a bodywork rather than judge it by eye.
Measuring functions
- Ferrous (MAG): Coating thickness on steel via magnetic induction.
- Non-ferrous (EDDY): Coating thickness on aluminium and other non-ferrous metals via eddy current.
- AUTO: Detects the substrate itself.
- Galvanised steel: Separate detection from 3 to 500 µm.
- Units: µm, mm or mil.
What you use it for
- Pre-purchase inspection: Locating overspray and filler that are not in the history.
- Appraisal and trade-in: Recording coating thickness per panel.
- After body repair: Checking whether the new coating matches the surrounding panels.
- Before polishing: Seeing how much paint is still there.
How to use it
- Switching on: The batteries are already included; switch the device on.
- Selecting the probe mode: AUTO, or MAG for steel and EDDY for aluminium.
- Zero calibration: Calibrate on the supplied reference plate or a bare piece of metal.
- Measuring: Place the probe straight and flat on the panel.
- Comparing: Measure each panel at several points and compare the values with each other.
Special functions and features
What makes the TG501 practical:
- Zero calibration: With reference plates for steel and aluminium and calibration foils.
- Beep tone: Confirmation with every measurement.
- Clear reading: The last measurement or the entire memory.
- Automatic switch-off: After 2 minutes without operation.
