The Topdon Phoenix Max is the flagship model of the Phoenix range: a diagnostic scanner featuring a 13.3-inch screen with 1920 × 1200 resolution, powered by an eight-core processor with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. The supplied Phoenix MDCI Pro interface supports J2534, DoIP, CAN FD, D-PDU and RP1210 and connects via WiFi, Bluetooth or cable. The device diagnoses all systems across more than 200 vehicle makes, handles all ten OBD modes and performs 35 service and maintenance procedures.

The emphasis lies in programming control units: online programming retrieves factory software from the server, online coding recalibrates a replacement module to the vehicle's configuration, and for the VAG group there are guided functions. The network topology map displays the control units and their buses as a schematic diagram. The included licence runs for 24 months on cars and vans, plus 12 months on optional software for heavy commercial vehicles.

KEY BENEFITS

✔Screen size tailored to the topology map: A diagram showing thirty control units with their bus connections displays legibly on 13.3 inches at 1920 × 1200 resolution in a single view, without zooming or scrolling.
✔Programme and code independently: Factory software comes directly from the server to the control unit. A blank or replacement module no longer needs to visit the franchised dealer.
✔18,600 mAh battery: Delivers approximately eight hours of operation, allowing the device to run through a working day without needing the charger.
✔Two years of updates, plus one year on the HD software: The car software is supported for 24 months. If you purchase the expansion for heavy commercial vehicles, you receive 12 months of updates for that as well.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Secured gateways require separate authorisation: FCA, Renault, the VAG group and Nissan protect their diagnostic ports. Without authorisation, the device remains limited to reading data on those makes.
✕Truck and EV diagnostics are not included as standard: The HD software and EV package are separate extensions that are activated annually.
✕A workshop device, not a handheld tablet: At 364 × 285 × 82 mm and 3.18 kg, this is equipment for the diagnostic cart or workbench, not for holding in your hand.
✕Online functions cease when the licence expires: The device continues to run on the last installed software version, but server-based programming and software for newer vehicles become unavailable.

Diagnostic functions:

The Topdon Phoenix Max performs comprehensive system diagnostics on all electronic control units present in the vehicle. Beyond generic OBD data, the device reads manufacturer-specific information for each make.

  • Read and clear fault codes: Retrieves stored codes with descriptions and status from every module. The device can scan up to eight CAN lines simultaneously, significantly shortening a complete scan; clearing can be done per module or across the entire vehicle.
  • Live data: Displays measurements as numerical values, graphs or combined in a single view. Values can be logged during a test drive and reviewed side-by-side afterwards.
  • Bidirectional control: Commands a component from the control unit to switch: a relay, injector, fan or valve. If the component responds to the command but fails during normal operation, the fault lies elsewhere.
  • Network topology map: Displays the control units and their buses as a schematic, with each module's fault status. If an entire branch disappears, the schematic points to the bus or gateway rather than individual modules.
  • Control unit information: Reads part number, hardware version, software version and calibration data—essential for determining whether a module carries the programming that belongs with this vehicle.

Service and maintenance functions:

The Topdon Phoenix Max supports 35 service and maintenance procedures. Available functions may vary by make, model and model year.

Engine, fuel and drivetrain:

  • Oil reset: Resets the service counter and clears the service reminder as soon as the interval is complete.
  • Throttle valve adjustment: Allows the control unit to relearn the end positions of the electronic throttle valve. If this is omitted after cleaning or replacement, the idling air flow will deviate from what the control unit expects.
  • Injector coding: Sets the calibration value for each cylinder's injector in the engine control unit. This value indicates how much the injector deviates from nominal output; the control unit compensates by adjusting pulse width. Particularly important for common-rail diesel engines.
  • Crankshaft tooth learning: Stores the manufacturing tolerance of the crankshaft gear so that any unevenness in the timing wheel is not flagged as a misfire. Necessary after replacement of the engine control unit, the crankshaft position sensor or the flywheel.
  • Power balance: Compares the torque contribution from each cylinder individually. A lagging cylinder becomes apparent without requiring any dismantling.
  • Reset fuel correction (A/F): Resets the learned mixture correction to zero, after which the control unit recalibrates based on the lambda sensor signal.
  • Automatic transmission learning: Runs the self-learning process of the automatic transmission again, restoring shift quality after maintenance or a fluid change.
  • Start-stop enable or disable: Determines whether the vehicle will automatically shut down the engine when stationary.
  • Cooling system bleeding: Runs the electric coolant pump so that trapped air is carried out with the fluid.

Exhaust aftertreatment:

  • Diesel particulate filter regeneration (DPF): Performs forced regeneration and resets the load and ash data after a filter replacement.
  • Petrol particulate filter regeneration (GPF): The same treatment for the particulate filter on direct-injection petrol engines.
  • AdBlue reset: Resets the SCR system counters and learned values after refilling or work on the dosing pump.
  • EGR adjustment: Allows the exhaust gas recirculation valve to relearn its end positions and flow values after cleaning or replacement.
  • NOx sensor reset: Clears the correction values from the old sensor so the new one is calibrated from the baseline value.

Brake system:

  • Electronic parking brake operation: Retracts the rear brake calliper pistons to the service position and back out, allowing pads and discs to be replaced without forcing the mechanism.
  • ABS bleeding: Operates the pump and valves in the control block so air remaining in the system after opening is discharged.

Suspension and steering:

  • Steering angle sensor reset (SAS): Stores which sensor value corresponds to straight-ahead position. If this reference point is incorrect, the stability control will intervene at the wrong time.
  • Suspension calibration: Adjusts the ride height and relearns the height sensors after work on the sensor or control module.

Safety, tyres and driving assistance:

  • Airbag control unit reset: Clears recorded crash data and associated codes after airbags and belt tensioners have been replaced.
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system reset (TPMS): Resets the system and clears the warning after changing a sensor, tyre or wheel.
  • Tyre size registration: Records the fitted tyre size in the control unit.
  • Starter interrupt (IMMO): Learns keys, removes lost keys from memory and calibrates the control module to the vehicle.
  • Key and chip programming (IMMO PROG): Optional function for component-level work: read and write key chips, access EEPROM and MCU memory, and edit engine and transmission control unit memory. Requires the T-Ninja Box.
  • Adaptive cruise control learning: Registers a replaced or repaired control module of the system with the vehicle. Physical radar alignment is performed with separate ADAS calibration equipment.

Interior, body and lighting:

  • Sunroof adjustment: Configures sunroof behaviour: lock, automatic closing in rain, memory position for sliding and tilting, and associated temperature threshold.
  • Headlight control calibration (AFS): Aligns the height adjustment and cornering function of the headlights to the vehicle's stance.
  • Window learning: Relearns the upper and lower positions of the side windows, restoring pinch protection and one-touch operation.
  • Seat learning: Reconnects a replaced or repaired seat with memory function to the control system.
  • Climate control learning: Relearns the blend and distribution valve end positions after replacement of a stepper motor or control panel.

Electrical system and vehicle data:

  • Battery registration (BMS): Communicates the type and capacity of the new battery to the charging system and clears learned ageing. If omitted, the vehicle will charge according to the profile of the old battery.
  • Mileage recording: Sets the mileage in the control unit, intended to transfer the original reading after instrument cluster replacement.
  • Rotor angle calibration: Records the difference between the rotor position measured by the drive motor sensor and the actual position of the magnetic field in hybrid and electric vehicles. If this angle drifts, the drive loses torque and efficiency.
  • High-voltage battery reading: Retrieves the condition and fault codes of the battery pack in hybrid and electric vehicles.
  • Transport mode release: Ends the factory mode that limits power consumption during transport and storage, disabling comfort functions.
  • Language conversion: Changes the language of the vehicle's central control panel.

Special functions and capabilities:

The Topdon Phoenix Max includes additional functions for programming and coding control modules, accessing secured vehicle networks, and recording and supporting service work.

Programming and coding:

  • Online programming: Retrieves the software file for the selected control module from the manufacturer's server and writes it to the vehicle. Available for thirteen brands: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Land Rover, Jaguar, Renault, Nissan, Subaru and Hyundai. Coverage extends to a specific model year per brand.
  • Online coding: Retrieves coding data from the manufacturer and writes it, so a replaced module adopts the specification of this vehicle. Available for twelve brands: Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru and Volkswagen.
  • Offline programming: Writes software without involvement of the manufacturer's server, available for Ford, Mazda, Opel and Vauxhall.
  • Guided functions (VAG): Follows the manufacturer-prescribed steps for Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda, with the device monitoring the sequence and conditions.
  • Adaptation and calibration (VAG): Performs parametrisation, feature activation and calibration and adjustment routines for Volkswagen and Audi.
  • Hidden features unlock: Activates factory settings that are disabled from the factory, such as video display while driving and warning signal behaviour. Available for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Toyota and Honda.

Secured network access:

  • FCA Secure Gateway: Opens the protected gateway of Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Alfa Romeo and Maserati from model year 2017 onwards, restoring the ability to clear fault codes, perform actuation and calibration. Requires separate authorisation.
  • Renault Secure Gateway: Provides access to the secured diagnostic port of recent Renault, Dacia and RSM models. Separate authorisation is also required here.
  • VAG SFD: Unlocks control modules protected by SFD in Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat vehicles for coding and actuation.
  • Nissan Secure Gateway: Opens the secured port of recent Nissan models.

Vehicle identification and scan methods:

  • Automatic vehicle identification: Reads the VIN from the control module and loads the correct diagnostic software, without manual navigation through brand, model and build year.
  • VIN scanning with camera: Captures the barcode of the chassis number with the built-in camera. If the code cannot be read, the number can still be entered manually.
  • Quick scan: Scans the vehicle in a short time and provides a health overview: which systems are present and where codes are logged.
  • Full system scan: Checks each present system individually, providing a complete picture before repair work begins.
  • Targeted scan: Opens a single control unit of your choice, useful when the fault has already been narrowed down to one system.
  • Ten OBD modes: Covers the complete statutory OBD package, including stored and pending codes, live data, oxygen sensor tests and emissions readiness status.

Measurement and recording:

  • Snapshot at fault occurrence: Saves the live data as it was at the moment the fault code was set, allowing you to assess the conditions retrospectively.
  • Live data recording and playback: Records a series of measurements during a test drive and plays them back frame by frame afterwards. Intermittent deviations that cannot be observed whilst driving are brought to light.
  • Comparison with a reference: Sets the recorded values alongside a previously saved recording from a vehicle in good working order.
  • Screenshot and screen print: Captures the image as video or photograph, useful for saving a measurement or presenting it to a colleague or supplier.

Reporting and workshop administration:

  • Diagnostic report: Records the session in a before-and-after repair report, with vehicle data, fault codes found and actions taken. Can be saved and shared.
  • Workshop details on the report: Adds your company name and details to the report, so it can be presented to the customer as your own document.
  • Customer management: Stores customer and vehicle data alongside the diagnoses performed.
  • History: Keeps all previous sessions for each vehicle with their associated data, so a recurring fault can be compared with the previous measurement.

Support and reference:

  • Remote assistance: Gives a remote technician access to the device screen to watch over during a difficult diagnosis.
  • Feedback to manufacturer: Sends the last twenty test reports when a vehicle is not recognised correctly or a function does not work, so the problem can be resolved in the software.
  • Repair data: Provides access to factory data for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche from 2011 onwards.
  • Fault code library: Stores the meaning of OBD fault codes, searchable even without a vehicle connected.
  • Coverage list: Shows which systems and functions are actually available per make and model, to be checked before a vehicle arrives.
  • Instructional material: Contains recordings showing how a function operates on a particular model.

Device management:

  • Single-step updating: Updates all selected vehicle software and the app in one go over wifi, directly on the device.
  • VCI maintenance: Activates the MDCI Pro and restores the firmware or system of the module from the device itself if needed.
  • Screen projection: Displays the image on a larger monitor via the HDMI output, useful when explaining a finding or working on a schematic.
