The OBDSTAR MS50 Basic is a fault code reader for motorcycles, mopeds, snowmobiles, ATVs and UTVs, designed as a portable tablet with a 5.0-inch capacitive touchscreen of 800×480 pixels running Android 5.1.1. Inside is an RK3128 quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor with a 2600 mAh lithium-polymer battery, expandable with a micro SD card up to 32 GB. The purchase includes a 1 year licence.

The device reads fault codes, displays live data streams as text, waveform or gauge view, performs actuator tests and supports module coding and programming. OBDSTAR supplies the Basic with two applications: MOTO Diag for diagnostics and Programmer. This is the entry-level version: the Basic diagnoses twenty brands fully, compared with thirty-five on the MS50 STD. What you can actually do on a specific motorcycle depends on the installed software and the diagnostic adapter that comes with that brand's connector.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Fifteen fewer brands than the STD — including KTM, Husqvarna, Hyosung, HM, Acellera, Victory, CFMoto, Haojue, Linhai, QJ Benelli, Shineray, Wuyang-Honda, Xindazhou Honda and Zontes are absent.
✕Eleven brands for odometer reset only — BMW, Buell, Cagiva, Ducati, Generic, Haojue, Harley-Davidson, KTM, MV Agusta, Peugeot and Triumph appear only in the dump list; the device does not perform full system diagnostics on these.
✕Nine connection adapters in the box — PGO and Hartford are supported by the software, but their adapters (M028 and M030) are purchased separately, as are those for Vespa, Aprilia and the ABS port on Benelli.
✕1 year licence — afterwards the device continues to work with the latest software version, but no new models or features are added.

Applications and functionality

The device connects to the diagnostic port of the motorcycle and thereby accesses the control modules present.

Systems you can access

  • Engine management: The control module for fuel injection and ignition, where most of the diagnostics takes place.
  • ABS: Read, control and configure the anti-lock braking system module on models equipped with ABS.
  • Immobiliser: The engine cut-off system for learning keys and transponders.
  • Instrument cluster: The odometer and its associated control module, including coding.
  • Suspension: Electronically controlled suspension and air suspension, where the model has it.
  • Handlebar switches: The electrical switch blocks on the left and right of the handlebars, individually accessible for diagnosis.
  • EPS: Electric power steering on models equipped with it.
  • BMS: The battery management system of electric and hybrid two-wheelers.
  • Alarm and parking: The alarm system and parking functions.
  • TPMS: The tyre pressure monitoring system.
  • Other modules: Which others are accessible varies by brand, model and year of manufacture.

Engine and drivetrain

  • Oil service reset: Reset the maintenance interval after an oil change.
  • Throttle body learning: Learn the base position of the electronic throttle after cleaning or replacement.
  • Idle speed learning: Calibrate the idle speed after maintenance to the induction system.
  • CO adjustment: Adjust the CO percentage for the correct air-fuel mixture and emission values.
  • Air-fuel ratio reset: Reset the adaptive values of the engine management.
  • Lambda sensor adaptation reset: Clear learned correction values after sensor replacement.
  • Engine adaptation reset: Clear general learned values after component repair or replacement.

Transmission, brakes and other systems

  • Transmission adaptation reset: Reset learned shift values from the transmission control module.
  • ABS bleeding: Activate the ABS pump to bleed the brake system after servicing.
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system reset: Reset the TPMS where fitted to the motorcycle.
  • Odometer correction: Adjust the recorded mileage on supported models.
  • EOL mode: Execute end-of-line procedures on supported control modules.
  • Control module memory erase: Remove stored data from a control module for a clean starting point.

Supported vehicle brands

The combination of make, model and year of manufacture is decisive, not the make alone. OBDSTAR divides MS50 Basic coverage across two separate lists. A make that appears only in the odometer list cannot be fully read. For some makes, a separate diagnostic adapter is also required; see the lists below.

Licence

  • Validity: One year from the device's first registration.
  • What updates add: New models, expansion of existing brands, additional service and coding functions, and fixes.
  • What requires an active licence: The latest vehicle software, WiFi updates and remote support.
  • After expiry: The device continues to work with the last installed version; new updates become available again only after renewal.
💡
Good to know: Register the device online before you start; only then can you install the latest software via WiFi, which is often necessary for recent models. Before purchasing, check whether your brand is listed for full diagnostics and which diagnostic adapter is required.
