The Autool AS502 is a brake fluid tester. It measures the water content in brake fluid and displays it as a percentage on screen. Moisture is what renders brake fluid unusable: it seeps through the hoses and lowers the temperature at which the fluid begins to boil.
Dip the probe into the reservoir and press the test button; after ten seconds the percentage appears. In addition to the standard setting for DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5.1, there is an expert mode with twelve manufacturer-specific DOT4 profiles, because not every DOT4 behaves the same way. The assessment is displayed immediately: up to 2 percent OK, between 2 and 3 percent replacement recommended, above that a warning.

POINTS TO NOTE
✕Measures water content, not boiling point. The specification sheet provides no value for boiling point. That is a different measurement.
✕Clean the probe before each measurement. Residue from the previous vehicle will otherwise affect your result.
✕Runs on four AAA batteries and powers down automatically after five minutes.
✕Brake fluid is corrosive. The manual specifies safety glasses and gloves.
Application and functionality
Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture through the rubber hoses, even in a sealed system. This moisture lowers the temperature at which the fluid boils, and a boiling brake line gives a spongy pedal. This tester determines how much moisture it contains; the boiling point itself is a separate measurement, as the AS506 performs.
The Autool AS502 supports the following measurement and setup functions:
- Water content measurement: The moisture percentage in the brake fluid, read after ten seconds.
- Three-level assessment: Up to 2 percent OK, between 2 and 3 percent replacement recommended, above 3 percent a warning.
- Standard mode: Three fluid types: DOT3, DOT4 and DOT5.1.
- Expert mode: Twelve manufacturer-specific DOT4 profiles, because not every DOT4 behaves the same way.
- Analogue bar display: The measured value also shown graphically, alongside the percentage.
- Backlight: Can be switched on and off with a dedicated button.

How to use it
- Clean the probe: Dry and free of residue from the previous measurement.
- Switch the tester on: Press and hold the power button for longer than two seconds.
- Select the fluid type: Standard mode with DOT3, DOT4 or DOT5.1, or expert mode with the manufacturer profile fitted to the vehicle.
- Open the reservoir and immerse the probe: Fully submerged in the fluid itself.
- Press the test button and read the result: After ten seconds the percentage with assessment appears on screen.

- Spiral cable of 260 mm in 304 stainless steel: Resistant to brake fluid and long enough to reach the bottom of the reservoir.
- Twelve manufacturer-specific DOT4 profiles: MOTUL, ATE, FERODO, MOBIL, BREMBO, TRW, BOSCH, CASTROL, TOTAL, VALEO, FUCHS and TEXTAR.
- Audible indication when the result is ready: You hear that the measurement is complete without looking at the display.
Where to use it
The measurement is performed where the age of the brake fluid is in question and a percentage carries more weight than the date on the bottle.
- At the major service: Brake fluid ages through moisture, not distance; a measurement tells you more than the date on the bottle.
- Before a long descent or track day: Where brakes get hot and a reduced boiling point becomes immediately apparent.
- With a spongy brake pedal: To rule out moisture as the cause before you investigate further.
- On trade-in or purchase: A thirty-second measurement per vehicle shows whether maintenance has been kept up.

Good to know: Always measure on the same spot in the reservoir for the same vehicle and record the date with the reading. A single percentage tells you little; the trend between two measurements shows how quickly this vehicle absorbs moisture.
