The Universal ELM327 (FT232RL) with HS/MS-CAN Switch is a diagnostic USB interface cable designed for direct serial communication between a vehicle and an external diagnostic system. This cable is equipped with a standard 16-pin OBD2 connector on the vehicle side and a USB-A connector for connection to a computer or laptop. The wired connection is primarily used for vehicle diagnostics, real-time monitoring of vehicle parameters, and performing module adjustments and configurations (coding), especially in vehicles using separate CAN networks.

During the communication cycle, the interface cable acts as a protocol converter that translates raw data from vehicle networks to a virtual COM port on the computer. The built-in FTDI FT232RL chip ensures extremely stable data transfer, which is essential for write operations to the ECU. In addition to standard OBD2 protocols (such as K-Line and ISO-CAN), the cable features a physical toggle switch. This allows the user to manually switch the pin assignment between the HS-CAN (High Speed) network, for powertrain modules, and the MS-CAN (Medium Speed) network. This gives diagnostic software access to specific secondary modules such as body electronics (BCM) or the instrument cluster.

ADVANTAGES

Physical switching between HS-CAN and MS-CAN for access to manufacturer-specific modules.
Integration of the FT232RL chip for guaranteed stability during long-term data transfer and encoding.
Support for ELM327 v1.5 commands, ensuring broad compatibility with J1850 protocols.
Wired USB connection eliminates the risk of signal loss that can occur with wireless interfaces.

KEY POINTS

Requires manual intervention with the switch when the software requests it during network scanning.
The interface depends on external diagnostic software and operating system-specific drivers to function.
Not compatible with mobile operating systems such as iOS or Android due to the USB connection.

Applications and functionalities

The ELM327 USB interface with switch offers a wide range of diagnostic capabilities, depending on the software used. The functions below are technically supported by the interface:

  • Reading and clearing DTCs: Detecting and removing diagnostic trouble codes from the engine control unit (ECU) and secondary modules via the OBD2 standard.
  • Live Data monitoring: Real-time reading of sensor data, such as engine speed, coolant temperature, lambda sensor values, and fuel pressures.
  • Vehicle configuration (As-Built Data): Reading and writing configuration files to enable or disable vehicle-specific options via compatible software.
  • Service functions: Support for performing static regenerations, calibrations, and reset procedures of learned values within various control units.

Special functions and capabilities

The addition of the manual switch expands the functionality of the standard ELM327 chip, resulting in the following specific hardware capabilities:

  • Hardware network switching: The physical switch moves the active pins on the OBD2 connector from the standard CAN bus (pins 6 and 14) to the MS-CAN bus (pins 3 and 11).
  • Access to secondary CAN modules: Enables communication with modules not connected to the main network, such as the GEM module, climate control, and parking sensors on specific car brands.
  • Module Initialization: Support for pairing or initializing new control modules in the MS-CAN network after replacement or repair.

Compatible vehicles

The cable functions as a standard OBD2 interface for all EOBD/OBD2-compatible vehicles. The added MS-CAN functionality is specifically developed for and tested on the following brands:

Ford, Mazda, Lincoln & Mercury:

  • All models with MS-CAN network: Suitable for almost all models from model year 2003 to present equipped with a separate Medium Speed CAN bus.
  • Global OBD2 support: Gasoline engines from model year 2001 and diesel engines from model year 2004 (EU market).

Compatible software and operating systems

This interface cable requires third-party diagnostic software to function. The hardware is optimized for software packages that access the MS-CAN network.

Compatible software:

  • FORScan: Full vehicle diagnostics, configuration changes, and module programming (requires the switch during module scans).
  • ELMConfig / Focccus / FF2: Specific software tools for adjusting As-Built data and hidden options on Ford and Mazda.
  • ScanMaster-ELM / MultiECUScan: For general OBD2 diagnostics (with MultiECUScan possibly in combination with additional adapter cables).

Operating systems:

  • Windows: Fully supported (Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11). Requires installation of virtual COM port (VCP) drivers for the FTDI chipset.
💡
Good to know: Install the latest FTDI drivers on your Windows system before plugging the interface into the USB port. Then check and configure the assigned COM port within your diagnostic software settings for stable communication.
