The Topdon RLink X3 is an advanced interface cable and communication module that functions as the physical bridge between the vehicle and a diagnostic PC system. This hardware interface communicates with the vehicle network via a standard 16-pin OBD2 connector and connects to a laptop or PC through a robust USB connection or a wireless connection. The interface is specifically designed for in-depth diagnostics, module coding, and performing complex ECU programming at the OEM level, eliminating the need for multiple brand-specific interfaces in the workshop.
Within the vehicle network, the interface cable acts as a fast data converter that translates raw signals from the vehicle modules for the connected diagnostic software. The data transfer is optimized for bandwidth-intensive tasks, with full hardware support for current communication protocols such as DoIP, CAN FD, J2534, D-PDU, and RP1210. Once the connection is initiated, the device seamlessly forwards communication requests from the PC to the vehicle's CAN network, allowing diagnostic technicians to monitor real-time parameters and write stable software updates to the control units.
ADVANTAGES
KEY POINTS
Applications and functionalities
The interface is designed to serve as a communication gateway for a wide range of diagnostic processes, depending on the connected software.
- Deep vehicle diagnostics: Reads DTC fault codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) from all available control units and networks, with the ability to properly reset them.
- Live data monitoring: Facilitates the display of current sensor values and module parameters, crucial for analyzing fuel systems, emissions, and databus activity.
- Actuator control: Offers the ability to perform active tests through diagnostic software, temporarily activating components such as valves, relays, and motors via the interface to test their physical operation.
Special features and capabilities
This module provides specific advanced functions necessary for modern maintenance of vehicles and heavy commercial trucks.
- J2534 Pass-Thru integration: Enables the user to communicate directly with factory servers via a standardized protocol. This allows ECUs to be flashed, reprogrammed, and coded using official factory software.
- DoIP and CAN FD support: Includes the necessary hardware architecture to communicate with broadband networks (Diagnostics over Internet Protocol and CAN Flexible Data-Rate), as applied in vehicles from around 2020 onward.
- D-PDU / RP1210 capacity: Supports communication standards widely used for diagnosing heavy-duty commercial vehicles and specific OEM packages such as VAG ODIS.
Compatible vehicles
Because this interface functions as a pass-through (Pass-Thru), vehicle compatibility is virtually universal, provided it is paired with the correct OEM software and an active license. The following brands have proven functionality with J2534 hardware:
Examples of supported OEM environments:
- VAG Group: (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda) via ODIS
- Mercedes-Benz: (Passenger cars and light commercial vehicles) via XENTRY Pass Thru EU
- BMW / MINI: (All models with OBD2) via ISTA
- Toyota / Lexus: (Almost all modern model years) via Techstream
- Ford / Mazda: (Models with CAN bus) via FDRS or FJDS
- General Motors (GM): (Opel, Chevrolet, etc.) via GDS2
Compatible software and operating systems
The module does not generate diagnostic screens itself but relies entirely on third-party software and the configuration of the associated communication drivers.
Compatible software:
- OEM J2534 software: VAG ODIS, Mercedes XENTRY, BMW ISTA, GM GDS2, Ford FDRS/FJDS, Honda HDS, Toyota Techstream, Volvo VIDA, Subaru SSM4, JLR SDD.
- Third-party Pass-Thru applications: Supports applications specifically developed according to SAE J2534 or ISO 22900 standards.
Operating systems:
- Windows: Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Note: always check the specific Windows requirements of the chosen OEM software, as some manufacturers impose strict compatibility requirements).
