The OBDSTAR M070 connects the 18-pin ECU diagnostic port of Tohatsu outboard motors to the 16-pin OBD2 (J1962)-input of an OBDSTAR device. At the engine end, the cable connects directly to the 18-pin port of the engine control unit.

The pin configuration of the 18-pin Tohatsu-connector differs from the OBD2 layout, which means communication cannot be established without this cable. Both ends are fitted with locking connectors and the cable features a robust shielded body — suitable for marine use. The cable unlocks the diagnostic connection to the outboard motor's engine control unit. Which functions become available thereafter is determined by the software and model of the connected OBDSTAR device; the cable itself does not add any coverage.

KEY BENEFITS

Direct connection to the 18-pin ECU port — no modifications or additional adapters required to establish communication.
Locking connectors — both ends feature a locking mechanism, ensuring the connection remains secure during diagnostics.
Robust cable body — the shielding is designed for use in an outboard motor's engine compartment.
For an environment without OBD2 port — the motor itself lacks a standard connection; this cable makes the port accessible.

IMPORTANT NOTES

18-pin version only — Tohatsu also uses a 6-pin diagnostic connection; a different cable is required for that.
No model list by year of manufacture — OBDSTAR does not provide models with years of manufacture for this cable; the connector present is the determining factor.
Works exclusively with OBDSTAR — diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers cannot be connected with this cable.
Coverage comes from your device — the cable only establishes the connection; available functions depend on the software of your OBDSTAR device.

Applications and functionality

Via the 18-pin port, you can access the engine control unit of the outboard motor.

Control units you can reach

  • Engine control unit (ECU):The outboard motor control module to which the 18-pin diagnostic port is connected.
  • Other modules:Whether additional units on board are accessible varies depending on the installation and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes:Retrieve stored and active fault codes from the ECU to identify the cause of a malfunction.
  • Clear fault codes:Empty the ECU memory after diagnosis is complete and the problem has been resolved.
  • View live data stream:Monitor engine parameters such as engine speed, water temperature and fuel pressure in real time.
  • Request ECU information:Read data about the engine control unit, including software version and identification numbers, for documentation or verification purposes.
  • Please note:Which functions actually work depends on the OBDSTAR device model and the associated software.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The determining factor is the 18-pin ECU connector, not the engine model.OBDSTAR does not provide model years for this cable; compatibility is based on the connector present.

  • Tohatsu:Outboard motors with 18-pin ECU connector — consult the OBDSTAR compatibility list for specific engine models and model years.
💡
Good to know:The 18-pin ECU diagnostic port is typically located in the engine cover of the Tohatsu outboard motor, near the engine control unit; consult the engine manual for the exact location for your model.Check that your motor has the 18-pin ECU connector and not the 6-pin connector before ordering.
