The OBDSTAR TCM-025 is an adapter cable that converts the 16-pin TCM connection of the ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 transmission control unit to a 15-pin DB15 connector, suitable for use with OBDSTAR diagnostic devices and programmers. The cable is specifically designed for TCMs equipped with the Infineon TC275 processor, the third generation of the ZF 8HP45 automatic transmission. This configuration is mainly found in vehicles from Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW, Mini, and various FCA/Stellantis models from model years 2013 and later.

The adapter cable allows a direct, wired connection between the TCM connector on the transmission control unit and the connected OBDSTAR device, without involving the vehicle’s OBD2 system. The 16-pin round TCM plug connects directly to the housing connector of the ZF 8HP45 unit, while the DB15 side passes signal lines to the programmer. This makes it possible to read or reprogram the TCM directly, even when the unit is removed from the vehicle. The cable supports communication via the protocols and data lines relevant to the TC275 that OBDSTAR equipment requires for TCM service operations.

Applications and functionalities

The TCM-025 Adapter Cable supports the following TCM service operations via OBDSTAR equipment on ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 units with TC275 processor.

  • TCM data reading: The control unit data of the ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 TCM is read out via the direct cable connection and transmitted to the connected OBDSTAR device for analysis or backup purposes.
  • TCM software writing / flashing: Replacement or updated software is written to the TC275 processor via the DB15 connection, enabling the firmware level of the transmission control unit to be updated or restored.
  • Cloning procedure: The original TCM data is read out and then written to a replacement unit, allowing a defective TCM to be replaced without vehicle-specific recoding via the dealer.
  • TCM initialization after replacement: After writing the correct software version, the cable supports the initialization steps performed by the OBDSTAR programmer to prepare the new TCM for use in the vehicle.
