The OBDSTAR TCM-025 is an adapter cable featuring a 16-pin round connector on the vehicle side for the transmission control module and a 15-pin DB15-connector on the device side. The 16-pin side connects directly to the housing connector of a ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 unit located on the transmission casing; you can also connect a removed unit directly to it.

This cable is specifically designed for TCMs equipped with the Infineon TC275 processor, the third generation of the ZF 8HP45 automatic transmission. This variant is commonly found in Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW, Mini and various FCA/Stellantis models from 2013 onwards. The connection operates entirely independently of the vehicle's OBD2 system: the DB15 side passes signal lines to the programmer, which uses the protocols and data lines relevant to the TC275 for TCM service operations. The cable provides access to this control unit only. Earlier generations and other ZF transmission types are not supported, nor are variants with different processors. The service operations available depend on your OBDSTAR device's software; the cable itself does not add any coverage.

✕OBDSTAR only — the cable works with OBDSTAR diagnostic devices and programmers; you cannot use it with diagnostic hardware from other manufacturers.
✕No additional coverage — the cable makes the control unit accessible; which service operations you can perform is determined by your device's software.
✕Gen 3 with TC275 only — earlier generations or other ZF transmission types are not supported; a separate cable exists for the TC277 variant.
✕Varies on BMW and Mini — whether the TC275 processor is present depends on production year and variant; pre-verification is required.

Applications and functionality

The TCM-025 connects a ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 unit with TC275 processor to the DB15 port of your OBDSTAR device.

Control units you can access

  • ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 TCM: The transmission control module with Infineon TC275 processor, via the 16-pin round connector on the housing.
  • Removed unit: The same connection can be used when the TCM is on the workbench outside the vehicle.

What you can do

  • Read TCM data: Retrieve control module data via the cable connection for analysis or as a backup.
  • Write or flash software: Write replacement or updated software to the TC275 processor to upgrade or restore the firmware level.
  • Perform cloning: Read the original TCM data and write it to a replacement unit, allowing a faulty TCM to be replaced without vehicle-specific recoding through the dealer.
  • Initialise after replacement: After writing the correct software version, perform the initialisation steps that prepare the new TCM for use.
  • Note: Which of these steps are available depends on your OBDSTAR programmer's software and licence; the cable only provides the connection.

Good to know: The TCM connector on the ZF 8HP45 Gen 3 is mounted directly on the transmission housing, and you can connect a standalone unit to it directly. On BMW and Mini models, the presence of the TC275 processor depends on the model year and production variant, so two apparently identical vehicles may differ. Verify the exact processor variant of the installed TCM before ordering.
