The OBDSTAR TCM-024 is an adapter cable with a 16-pin connector on the vehicle side for transmission control and a 15-pins DB15 connector on the device side. The 16-pin side connects directly to the TCM connector of a ZF 8HP45 or 8HP45-TC277 transmission control unit located on the gearbox; transmission removal is not required.

The cable is designed for the ZF 8HP45-90 and 8HP45 Gen3 with TC277 processor. This processor handles signal processing, and the cable's pin configuration is matched to the voltage and data signals required by the TC277 architecture. Because the connection runs directly through the physical TCM connector, communication is possible outside the vehicle CAN network in bench mode, without the vehicle needing to be fully operational. The cable provides access to this transmission control unit only and no other modules. ZF 8HP variants with a processor architecture other than the TC277 are not supported. Whether reading, cloning and reprogramming actually succeed depends on your OBDSTAR device's software and licence.

LIMITATIONS

OBDSTAR only — the DB15 side is designed for OBDSTAR diagnostic and programming devices and not for diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers.
No additional coverage — the cable makes the unit accessible; what you can read or write is determined by your device's software.
Processor variant is critical — ZF 8HP versions with a processor architecture other than the TC277 are not supported; a separate cable is required for the TC275 version.
Connector access — on some vehicles, you may need to remove surrounding components before you can connect.

Applications and functionality

The TCM-024 connects a ZF 8HP45 transmission control unit with TC277 processor to the DB15 port of your OBDSTAR device.

Control units you can access

  • ZF 8HP45-90 transmission control unit: Via the 16-pin TCM connector on the transmission side.
  • ZF 8HP45 Gen3 (TC277): Same connector, with the TC277 processor as the core of signal processing.

What you can do

  • Read TCM: Extract the current software and calibration parameters from the unit via the direct 16-pin connection, without routing through the vehicle CAN network.
  • Clone TCM: Read the complete contents of the TC277 processor and write to a replacement or identical unit, including all stored transmission parameters.
  • Reprogram TCM: Write back modified or updated software, for example during software replacement or adjustment of transmission settings.
  • Work in bench mode: Access the unit outside the vehicle or without an active vehicle network via the DB15 connection.
  • Identify control unit: Read module identification, such as software version and hardware number of the connected ZF TCM.
  • Note: Which operations are available depends on your OBDSTAR device's software and licence; the cable provides the connection only.
