The OBDSTAR TCM-022 is an adapter cable with a 16-pin connector on the vehicle side for the Continental transmission control module and a 15-pin DB15-connector on the device side. The 16-pin side connects to the Continental TCU port in the mechatronic unit of a ZF 6HP automatic gearbox, as fitted to the 6HP19, 6HP21, 6HP26 and related variants.

The mechatronic unit is located internally within the gearbox housing and therefore has its own connector on the module itself. Via this connection, wired access to the TCM is possible outside the vehicle OBD2 port, even when the CAN-bus or K-line is not accessible through the standard diagnostic coupling. This route is used when the gearbox is serviced separately from the vehicle on the workbench, or when communication problems via the vehicle block diagnosis. The cable supports Continental units in the ZF 6HP series only; the same gearbox fitted with a TCU from another supplier falls outside its scope. Reading, reprogramming and calibration is only possible to the extent that your own OBDSTAR device software supports.

LIMITATIONS

✕OBDSTAR only — the DB15 side is designed for OBDSTAR diagnostic devices and programmers; diagnostic hardware from other manufacturers cannot be used with it.
✕No additional coverage — the cable provides the connection; whether reading, programming and calibration succeeds depends on your own device software.
✕Continental units only — TCUs from other suppliers, such as Siemens or Bosch, in the same ZF 6HP gearboxes are not supported.
✕Not an OBD2 adapter cable — the cable requires direct connection to the TCM connector of the mechatronic unit and is not intended for the diagnostic port.

Applications and functionality

The TCM-022 connects the Continental transmission control unit in a ZF 6HP automatic gearbox to the DB15 input of your OBDSTAR device.

Control units you can access

  • Continental TCU in the ZF 6HP:The transmission control unit in the mechatronic module, via the 16-pin port on the unit.
  • Removed gearbox:The same connection can be used when the gearbox is removed and powered externally.

What you can do

  • Read TCM:Retrieve the current software version, calibration parameters and fault codes from the Continental unit via the wired connection.
  • Programme TCM:Write new software or modifications, even when communication via the vehicle is not possible due to CAN-bus faults.
  • Calibrate TCM:Reset the adaptive parameters of the gearbox after replacement or repair of the mechatronic unit.
  • Perform bench diagnostics:Access the TCM with the gearbox removed and powered externally.
  • Note:Which of these operations are possible depends on the software and licence of your OBDSTAR device; the cable only provides the connection path.

Good to know: The Continental TCM in the ZF 6HP series features a 16-pin connector mounted on the mechatronic unit, located internally within the transmission housing cover. Direct access therefore requires removal of the transmission or the sump pan. Additionally, identical housings have also been supplied with TCU units from other manufacturers. Verify that the unit is genuinely Continental before ordering.
