The OBDSTAR TCM-019 is an Adapter Cable that converts a 16-pin TCM connector to a 15-pin DB15 connector, designed for reading and programming the transmission control module (TCM) in vehicles with a GM 6L45, 6L50, 6L80, or 6L90 automatic transmission. The cable provides a direct connection to the TCM connector on the transmission, bypassing the vehicle's OBD2 port. The cable is exclusively compatible with OBDSTAR diagnostic devices and programmers.

The TCM-019 enables direct TCM communication by connecting the cable to the 16-pin plug of the transmission control module itself. Through the DB15 output, the connection is made to the OBDSTAR interface, allowing the programmer to access the TCM for functions such as reading and writing calibration data and resetting adaptation values. This method is used when communication via the standard OBD2 diagnostic cable is insufficient or when the TCM is programmed outside the vehicle on the workbench.

CAUTIONS

✕ The cable is only suitable for GM 6L45, 6L50, 6L80, and 6L90 transmissions; other automatics with different TCM connectors are not supported.
✕ The DB15 connector requires an OBDSTAR interface; the cable is not compatible with diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers.
✕ Access to the TCM connector on the transmission may require partial disassembly of the center console tunnel or chassis in some vehicles.

Applications and Functions

The TCM-019 Adapter Cable supports the following TCM-related functions via compatible OBDSTAR equipment:

  • Reading TCM data: Reading current calibration data, software version, and configuration parameters from the transmission control module of GM 6L-series automatics.
  • Writing TCM data: Writing back modified or new calibration files to the TCM, including replacement of a rebuilt or new transmission control module.
  • Resetting adaptation values: Clearing stored shift patterns and adaptive learning values in the TCM so the transmission can relearn after a repair or overhaul.
  • Bench programming: Programming the TCM outside the vehicle on the workbench via the direct 16-pin TCM connection, without the vehicle being present.
