The OBDSTAR TCM-019 is an adapter cable featuring a 16-pin connector on the vehicle side for the transmission control module and a 15-pin DB15-connector on the device side. The 16-pin end connects directly to the TCM connector on the transmission, located on the transmission housing rather than the OBD2 port of the vehicle.

The cable is designed for GM 6L45, 6L50, 6L80 and 6L90 automatic transmissions. This dedicated TCM connection exists because the module must be accessible independently of the vehicle: via the DB15 output, the programmer gains access to functions such as reading and writing calibration data and resetting adaptive values. This approach is used when communication through the standard OBD2 diagnostic cable is insufficient or when the TCM is being programmed on the bench. The cable provides only this connection; it unlocks the transmission control module exclusively and no other modules. Which read, write and reset functions are available depends on the software of your own OBDSTAR device. Other automatic transmissions with a different TCM connector are not compatible with this cable.

LIMITATIONS

✕OBDSTAR only — the DB15 connector requires an OBDSTAR interface; the cable is not compatible with diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers.
✕No additional functionality — the cable establishes the connection, but which TCM functions you can perform depends on your own device's software.
✕Disassembly required — on some vehicles, access to the TCM connector requires partial removal of the centre console tunnel or undercarriage components.
✕6L series only — exclusively for GM 6L45, 6L50, 6L80 and 6L90; automatic transmissions with a different TCM connector are not supported.

Applications and functionality

The TCM-019 connects the transmission control unit of a GM 6L series automatic gearbox to the DB15 port on your OBDSTAR device.

Control units you can access

  • GM 6L transmission control unit: The TCM of the 6L45, 6L50, 6L80 and 6L90 automatic, via the 16-pin connector on the transmission.
  • Removed unit: The same connector can be used when the TCM is removed from the vehicle for bench programming.

What you can do

  • Read TCM data: Retrieve current calibration data, software version and configuration parameters from the control unit.
  • Write TCM data: Write back modified or new calibration files, including for a reconditioned or replacement transmission control unit.
  • Reset adaptation values: Clear stored shift patterns and adaptive learning values, allowing the transmission to relearn after repair or overhaul.
  • Perform bench programming: Programme the TCM outside the vehicle via the direct 16-pin connection, without the vehicle needing to be present.
  • Note: Which operations are actually possible depends on your OBDSTAR device's software and licence; the cable only provides the connection path.
