The OBDSTAR TCM-005 is an adapter cable designed for direct connection to the Bosch TCM control units of the DQ380 (0DE), DQ381 (0GC), and DQ500 types — the 7-speed wet-clutch DSG transmissions widely used in high-performance models and heavier versions within the Volkswagen group. The cable connects a 16-pin TCM connector on the TCM side to a 15-pin DB15 connector on the device side and is exclusively compatible with OBDSTAR readers or programmers.

The adapter cable enables direct access to the transmission control unit without involving the vehicle's OBD2 port. The connection is established via the DB15 connector to the OBDSTAR device, which then communicates with the Bosch TCM using the corresponding communication protocols. This type of direct TCM connection is used for operations where standard OBD2 communication does not provide sufficient access to the transmission control unit, such as reading or rewriting TCM data on VW platform vehicles (MQB, MLB) with DQ380, DQ381, or DQ500 transmissions.

Applications and functionalities

The TCM-005 adapter cable supports the following functions via direct connection to the Bosch TCM of DQ380, DQ381, and DQ500 transmissions in combination with OBDSTAR equipment.

  • Reading TCM data: Reading the current programming data from the transmission control unit via the direct 16-pin TCM connection, without using the vehicle's OBD2 port.
  • Writing TCM data: Writing back or updating TCM software and calibration parameters directly to the Bosch control unit via the DB15 connection.
  • Transmission identification: Retrieving TCM identification data such as software version and hardware identification of the DQ380, DQ381, or DQ500.
  • Direct TCM communication: Connection to the transmission control unit at the hardware level, enabling operations that are not or only partially accessible via the standard OBD2 interface.
