The OBDSTAR M069 is the adapter cable for the 8-pin diagnostic port on outboard motors. On the engine side, it connects to that 8-pin port on the motor; on the device side, it connects to the 16-pin OBD2 (J1962)-connector of your OBDSTAR diagnostic equipment.

Outboard motors do not have standard automotive OBD2 ports. Manufacturers such as Suzuki, Evinrude, Johnson and Selva use their own proprietary 8-pin diagnostic connector instead. The pin configuration of this cable is matched to the engine-specific communication protocols of these brands, ensuring signals reach the diagnostic reader unaltered. The exact protocol varies by manufacturer and engine model. The cable provides access to the outboard motor control unit—nothing more. What you can do with the data depends on your own device's software; the cable itself adds no additional functionality. It is not intended for road vehicles.

KEY BENEFITS

Four brands on one cable — Suzuki, Evinrude, Johnson and Selva all share the 8-pin port, so you don't need a separate cable for each manufacturer.
Matched to engine-specific pin configuration — the contacts follow the layout of supported outboard motors, with no intermediate electronics.
Standard OBD2 on the device side — the J1962 connector plugs directly into the OBD2 port of your equipment; no intermediate adapter required.
Genuine OBDSTAR accessory — part of the M-series cable range and designed for OBDSTAR marine diagnostic tools.

IMPORTANT NOTES

For engines with the 8-pin port only — outboard engines with a non-standard diagnostic connector cannot be connected via this cable.
Not for road vehicles — the cable is designed for marine applications only, not for automotive or motorcycle diagnostics.
OBDSTAR equipment only — this cable is not compatible with diagnostic systems from other manufacturers.
Does not add vehicle coverage — which engines and functions are actually supported depends on the software of your own device.

Applications and functionality

This connection gives you access to the engine electronics of the outboard motor.

Control units you can reach

  • Engine control unit: The control unit of the outboard motor, which is connected to the 8-pin port.
  • Other modules: Whether anything beyond engine control is accessible varies by motor and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: Retrieve stored and active fault codes from the engine control unit.
  • Clear fault codes: Empty the fault memory once the cause has been resolved.
  • View live data: Real-time values such as engine speed, temperature and sensor readings while running.
  • Note: Which functions are available varies by motor and OBDSTAR device.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The determining factor is the 8-pin diagnostic port on the motor, not the model. For these brands, no separate engine models or model years are specified; what matters is whether the outboard motor is equipped with the 8-pin port.

  • Evinrude: Outboard motors with 8-pin diagnostic port.
  • Johnson: Outboard motors with 8-pin diagnostic port.
  • Selva: Outboard motors with 8-pin diagnostic port.
  • Suzuki: Outboard motors with 8-pin diagnostic port.
💡
Good to know: The 8-pin diagnostic port is typically located in the motor housing or on the side of the engine block; the motor manual specifies the exact location for each model. Verify that your outboard motor actually has the 8-pin port before ordering.
