The OBDSTAR M003A is a multifunctional cable featuring a 16-pin OBD2 connector (J1962) on one end and individual loose wires on the other. You connect these loose ends using crocodile clips, solder joints or bench adapters to specific pins on an ECU, BCM or vehicle connector.

The cable exists for situations where a direct OBD2 connection is not viable: in bench and boot mode setups or in vehicles with non-standard OBD2 wiring. Because the wires remain individually accessible, you can connect CAN-High, CAN-Low, K-line and power lines individually. The cable simply splits out the lines; it does not determine which module responds. You must know which pin goes where, and your own tool's software determines what is possible thereafter.

ADVANTAGES

Pin-by-pin connection — usable when a direct OBD2 connection is not possible or not practical.
Suitable for bench and boot mode — a removed ECU can be connected to the diagnostic device on the workbench.
Direct access to signal lines — CAN-High, CAN-Low, K-line and power pins are individually accessible.
Universally applicable — can be used as an intermediate cable across different vehicle makes and ECU types.

LIMITATIONS

Clips and bench adapters not included — crocodile clips or adapters for the loose wires are not supplied.
Pinout knowledge is essential — without the correct wiring diagram for the target ECU, incorrect connection is easily made.
Designed for OBDSTAR equipment — operation with diagnostic tools from other manufacturers is not guaranteed.
Does not add vehicle coverage — the cable makes the connection; which makes and procedures are supported is determined by your own device.

Applications and functionality

Via the individual wires, you can reach connection points outside the standard OBD2 port.

Control units you can access

  • Standalone ECU on the workbench: Accessible via separate power and communication lines.
  • BCM and other modules: Can be connected to the vehicle connector when the standard OBD2 port provides no access.
  • Modules with non-standard wiring: Accessible by connecting the relevant lines individually by wire.

What you can do

  • Connect via OBD2: Couple the diagnostic device with the 16-pin J1962 connector to the cable.
  • Split out pins: Make each OBD2 line individually available on a separate wire.
  • Connect a bench setup: Connect a standalone ECU with power and communication lines to the device.
  • Make CAN and K-line connections: Connect directly to CAN-High, CAN-Low or K-line for modules not accessible via the standard port.
  • Supply power and ground: Bring 12V and ground to the bench setup from the vehicle or an external source.
  • Note: What is possible depends on the target ECU, the setup used and your OBDSTAR device.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The pinout of the target ECU or vehicle connector is decisive, not the model. The source lists no makes or model years: the cable is designed as universal and is used custom-fitted per connection.

  • Vehicles with non-standard OBD2 wiring: The individual wires enable connection per pin.
  • Bench and boot mode setups: For standalone ECUs from various makes and types.
  • OBDSTAR diagnostic and key programming equipment: The OBD2 side connects to the device or to an intermediate interface.
💡
Good to know: Always check the pinout of the target ECU first using a wiring diagram and test the wires with a multimeter. This prevents short circuits between a power line and a signal line, which can permanently damage a module. Before ordering, verify that you already have the necessary terminals or bench adapters for the individual wires.
