The OBDSTAR M079 connects the round 10-pin MTU diagnostic connector to the 16-pin OBD2 (J1962) port on your OBDSTAR device. On the engine side, the round 10-pin plug connects to the diagnostic port of the MTU engine.

MTU marine engines do not feature a standard OBD2 port. The cable converts the pin configuration of the 10-pin connector electrically to the corresponding OBD2 pins. It functions solely as a passive pin-to-pin connection and contains no active electronics, preventing signal distortion or additional latency. What the cable enables is communication with the engine control unit (ECU) of the MTU engine. Which diagnostic functions work depends on the connected OBDSTAR device and the MTU protocols supported by the associated software.

KEY BENEFITS

Connect without modification — the cable attaches to the existing 10-pin diagnostic port; no changes to the vessel's wiring.
Passive connection — without active electronics, there is no signal distortion or extra latency in ECU communication.
Pin configuration matched to MTU — the wiring follows the layout these engines use for diagnostics.
No power or configuration required — the connection is ready as soon as both ends are connected.

IMPORTANT NOTES

10-pin version only — MTU also uses a 12-pin diagnostic connector; a different cable is required for that.
No model list by year of manufacture — OBDSTAR does not provide engine types with years of manufacture for this cable; the connector configuration is decisive.
Locked to OBDSTAR — diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers will not work with this cable.
Coverage comes from the device — available functions are determined by the OBDSTAR unit and supported MTU protocols, not by the cable.

Applications and functionality

Via the 10-pin connector, you can access the engine control unit of the MTU motor.

Control units you can reach

  • Engine control unit (ECU): The control unit of the MTU marine engine behind the 10-pin diagnostic port.
  • Other modules: Whether additional units on board are accessible varies by installation and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: Retrieve stored and active fault codes from the ECU to diagnose engine problems.
  • Clear fault codes: Remove fault codes from ECU memory after repair or maintenance.
  • Display live data: Read engine parameters such as engine speed, temperature and pressure values in real time via the 10-pin port.
  • Establish ECU communication: Set up the connection between the OBDSTAR device and the MTU engine control via the converted OBD2 interface.
  • Please note: Which functions are actually available depends on MTU support in your OBDSTAR software.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The determining factor is the 10-pin MTU diagnostic connector, not the engine type. Only engines and vessels with this specific connector configuration are supported; model years are not specified by OBDSTAR.

  • MTU: Marine engines with 10-pin diagnostic connector
💡
Good to know: The 10-pin MTU diagnostic port is typically located directly on or near the engine unit; consult the vessel or engine documentation to determine the exact location before connecting the cable.Verify that the MTU connector has ten pins and not twelve before ordering.
