The OBDSTAR M078 is an adapter cable that converts a 9-pin round OBD connector to a standard 16-pin OBD2 (J1962) connector. The cable is intended for use with motorboat engines from manufacturers that use a 9-pin round diagnostic connector, including Mercury Diesel, Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, Kohler Power Systems, and VM Motori. The cable enables establishing a diagnostic connection with an OBDSTAR diagnostic device or programmer on engines that do not have a standard OBD2 port.

The 9-pin round plug on one side connects directly to the diagnostic port of the respective marine diesel engine, while the 16-pin OBD2 connector on the other side connects to the diagnostic device. The cable provides signal pass-through between the engine system and the reader, ensuring communication protocols like CAN or K-line are correctly transmitted. This allows reading of fault codes, live data, and other engine parameters via the OBDSTAR diagnostic software.
