The OBDSTAR FCA 12+8 is the adapter cable for vehicles in the FCA group equipped with a Security Gateway Module (SGW). On the vehicle side, you connect the 12-pin and 8-pin connectors to the SGW module wiring in the dashboard; on the device side, the cable terminates in a 16-pin OBD2 connector for your OBDSTAR diagnostic equipment.

From model year 2018 onwards, FCA installed a security module between the OBD2 port and the vehicle network. This module permits reading but blocks write access. By connecting directly to the module's wiring, this restriction is physically bypassed, granting full access to the CAN-bus network, with communication protocols passed through unchanged to the OBD2 connector. The cable provides access to the network behind the gateway; it does not itself encode or programme anything. Which functions you can perform depends on your own device's software and licences.

KEY BENEFITS

Write access on FCA vehicles with SGW — clearing fault codes and running active tests becomes possible again on vehicles where the gateway blocks this via the OBD2 port.
Physical gateway bypass — connection is made directly to the SGW module wiring itself, not via a software workaround.
Both connectors on one cable — the 12-pin and 8-pin connectors are combined on the vehicle side, as the module wiring requires.
Genuine OBDSTAR accessory — the cable is manufactured for OBDSTAR's own diagnostic devices and programmers with 16-pin OBD2 input.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Disassembly required beforehand — you must first gain access to the SGW module: it is located behind the dashboard and cannot be reached without removal.
Not for models without gateway— vehicles manufactured before 2018 do not have an SGW; in those cases you simply connect to the OBD2 port and this cable is not required.
Exclusively for OBDSTAR equipment — the cable is not compatible with diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers.
Adds no vehicle coverage— the cable opens the network; which functions become available thereafter is determined by your device's own software.

Applications and functionality

Via the bypass, you can reach the control modules located behind the Security Gateway.

Control units you can access

  • Control modules behind the gateway:The modules on the CAN-bus network for which the gateway normally permits read-only access.
  • Modules with write access:The control units on which coding, resetting and active testing becomes possible once the lock-out is bypassed.

What you can do

  • The gateway bypass:Bypass the security firewall physically to obtain write access.
  • Active component testing:Actuate relays and solenoids for diagnostic purposes.
  • Error code clearing:Remove permanent DTCs from memory, which is often blocked via the standard OBD port.
  • Oil and service interval reset:Reset service indicators after a maintenance appointment.
  • Perform system coding:ECU configuration programming and adjustment.
  • Please note:Which of these functions are actually available varies depending on the model and the OBDSTAR device.

Compatible vehicles and applications

Determining factor is the presence of the Security Gateway Module, not the model. The cable is designed for vehicles from the FCA group manufactured from 2018 onwards that are equipped with an SGW. The models listed below have been confirmed in the product data.
