The OBDSTAR ECU Master is a PC-controlled ECU programmer that lets you read, edit, and write engine control units on a bench setup. The device sits between the mounted controller and a Windows PC: the PC runs the software while the device provides power and communication with the unit on the bench. Which vehicles and modules you can access depends not on the hardware itself, but on the configuration unlocked to its serial number.

This version comes with Configuration B, the setup for motorcycles. It focuses exclusively on engine management and covers according to the manufacturer over one hundred brands and more than three hundred control unit types — from mopeds and scooters to quads, snowmobiles, and heavy touring bikes. OBDSTAR deliberately keeps motorcycle work in its own configuration: none of the other three includes it.

What sets this apart from simpler tools is the five programming modes. Beyond the diagnostic connector and bench access, the ECU Master also features boot, JTAG, and BDM, so control units that won't respond through standard methods remain accessible. The other configurations run on the same device and can be activated later without new hardware.

KEY BENEFITS

The only way to reach motorcycle ECMs on this platform — OBDSTAR has separated motorcycle work; none of the other configurations includes it.
Control units by name, not just brand lists — For Harley-Davidson, Honda, CFMOTO, and Kawasaki, the manufacturer lists specific control unit types, down to Keihin and Denso series.
Most affordable entry point of the four — Ideal for a workshop focused on motorcycles that doesn't need coverage for cars or commercial vehicles.
Expand later without buying new equipment — The other configurations run on the same device and can be added to the same serial number.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Engine management only — Transmission, body, and chassis modules are outside this configuration.
No cars or commercial vehicles — You'll need Configuration A or C for those; the configurations aren't interchangeable.
No airbag, battery, or SAS resets — Those functions are in Configuration D.
The software is available in English and Chinese — There is no Dutch language version.

Application and functionality

Configuration B is designed for working on motorcycle engine control units. The following operations are available with it.

  • Read and write data: Read the contents of the motorcycle ECM and write them back — the foundation for every operation in this configuration.
  • Clone control unit: Transfer the contents of a faulty controller to a replacement unit, allowing the motorcycle to accept it.
  • Read and write VIN: Read the frame number and write it to a replacement controller.
  • Read and write ISN: Read and write the immobilizer code from the controller, necessary when pairing keys to a replaced unit.
  • Reset to factory status: Restore a used controller to its original state, so it can be paired with another motorcycle as if new.
  • Work with the data buffer: Save read data temporarily and reuse it in the next operation.
  • Calibrate odometer: Adjust the stored mileage to match the actual reading on supported controllers.

The five operation modes

Which mode you need depends on the controller. The ECU Master supports all five.

Mode When you use it
OBD Via the motorcycle's diagnostic connector, without removing the control unit. The least invasive method, but not every operation is available this way.
BENCH The removed control unit receives power and communication on the workbench via the BENCH-C V1 cable. For motorcycles, this is the standard procedure, and the manufacturer mentions it for virtually every brand-specific function.
BOOT The control unit is started in boot mode by making a fixed connection on the circuit board. Necessary for controllers that won't release the data you want to read during normal operation.
JTAG Direct access to the processor via the debug interface, using the C4-10 adapter.
BDM The second debug interface on the same C4-10 adapter, for processors without JTAG support.

Brand-specific support

For the brands listed below, the manufacturer names the controller types specifically. This is more useful than a brand name alone, as it tells you whether your exact unit is included.

Harley-Davidson

The CAN versions with 2-pin and 3-pin connectors and the J1850 version: read and write data via the bench, plus read the VIN. For the MT21, VIN reading and odometer calibration are also available.

Honda

The Keihin controllers from the M32R, SH705X, MPC560, and RH850 series, read and write via the bench.

CFMOTO

Clone via the bank of the controllers MSE6.0, MSE8.0, MSE9.0, US6.0 and ME17 (MED17.8.10).

Kawasaki

Read and write Denso controllers from the 21175 series via the bank.

Supported brands

The brands listed below are included in configuration B. The exact controller types supported per brand vary and can be searched in the software for each manufacturer.

Access, Adamoto, Aeon, AJP, AJS, Aprilia, Arctic Cat, Argo, Bajaj, Baltmotors, Barton, Benda, Benelli, Bennche, Beta, BFR, BMW, Bobcat, Briggs & Stratton, Bristol, Brixton, BRP, Can-Am, CFMOTO, Changjiang, Chironex, Daelim, Dayang, Derbi, Ducati, Freedom, Gaokin, GasGas, Gilera, Goes, Hanway, Harley-Davidson, Hartford, Herald, Hisun, Honda, Hunter Motorcycles, Husqvarna, Hyosung, Indian, Italjet, Jialing, Johnny Pag, Junak, Kawasaki, Keeway, Kiden, Kohler, Kove/Colove, KSR Moto, KTM, Kymco, Lambretta, Lexmoto, Lifan, Linhai, Loncin, M1NSK, Macbor, Mash, Massimo, MGB, Mitt, Mondial, Moto Guzzi, Moto Morini, Motron Motorcycles, Mutt, Neco, Odes/Aodes, Peugeot, PGO, Piaggio, Polar Fox, Polaris, QJ Benelli, QJMotor, Qooder, Quadro, Royal Alloy, Royal Enfield, Russkaya Mehanika, Segway, Sherco, Sinnis, Stallion, Stels, SWM, SYM, TGB, Vespa, Vinto, Vitacci, Voge, Vortex, Wels, WK, Zongshen and Zontes.

How it works in practice

  1. Download the ECU Master software from the Download Center on the OBDSTAR website and install it on a PC running Windows 10 or later.
  2. Create an account and register your device so that configuration B is unlocked for your serial number.
  3. Connect the ECU Master to the PC using the USB-A to USB-B cable and to the power outlet using the 14 V, 60 W adapter.
  4. Remove the control unit from the motorcycle and connect it to the BENCH-C V1 cable; use the jumper wires to bridge the pin configuration of that controller.
  5. Select the motorcycle segment in the software and search for the controller by brand or type; the search bar highlights the matches.
  6. Read the data and save a backup before making any changes.
  7. Perform the operation and write the data back to the control unit.

Package contents

  • 1x OBDSTAR ECU Master programmer — The device itself, with DC, USB, COMM and IG connections.
  • 1x Charger 14 V / 60 W — Powers the device and the connected control unit on the workbench.
  • 1x M001C main cable — The main connection between the device and the control unit to be connected.
  • 1x USB-A to USB-B cable — Connects the device to the PC running the software.
  • 1x BENCH-C V1 cable — The bench cable with labeled wires for connecting a removed control unit.
  • 1x Set of jumper wires (8 versions) — Bridge different pin configurations on the bench, which is often necessary for motorcycle ECUs.
  • 1x 3-in-1 jumper extension cable — Extends and combines jumper connections without loose wiring.
  • 1x C4-10 adapter — Provides access to the JTAG and BDM interface of the processor.
  • 1x W004 read and write wire — Component-level connection with connector.
  • 1x W005 read and write wire — Alternative version for a different connector.
  • 1x W006 read and write wire — Loose wire for a solder connection where no connector fits.

💡 Good to know: The hardware is the same for all versions; only the unlocked configuration differs. If you work on cars and commercial vehicles in addition to motorcycles, you can add configuration A or C to the same device — so you don't need to buy a second unit. Keep your serial number handy when ordering, as the configuration will be unlocked to it.
