The OBDSTAR ECU Master is a PC-controlled ECU programmer that lets you read, edit, and write engine control units on a bench setup. The device sits between the removed control module and a Windows PC: the PC runs the software while the device provides power and communication with the unit on the bench. Which vehicles and modules you can access depends not on the hardware itself, but on the configuration unlocked to the serial number.
This version comes with Configuration A, the setup for passenger cars and electric vehicles. It unlocks four module groups: engine management, transmission, body and chassis modules, and battery management and vehicle control modules for electric vehicles. For engine management, that includes controllers like Bosch MED and EDC17, Continental SIMOS, the GPEC series and the Delphi series; for transmissions, over five hundred types, including DSG units.
What sets this apart from simpler tools is the five editing modes. Beyond the diagnostic connector and bench access, the ECU Master also features boot, JTAG and BDM, so control modules that won't respond the normal way remain accessible. Other configurations run on the same device and can be activated later without buying new hardware.

Application and functionality
Configuration A is designed for working on engine control units in passenger vehicles and electric vehicles. The following operations are available with it.
- Clone control unit: Transfer the complete contents of a faulty control unit to a replacement unit, allowing the vehicle to accept the new unit without dealer intervention.
- Correct CheckSum: Recalculate the checksum after making changes, so the control unit accepts the modified data as valid.
- Convert and unlock IMMO data: Read, convert, and unlock immobilizer data as needed when pairing a used control unit.
- Enable and disable IMMO: Turn the immobilizer on or off within the control unit.
- Read and write VIN: Read the vehicle identification number and write it to a replacement control unit.
- Calibrate odometer: Adjust the stored mileage in the control unit to match the actual reading.
- Reset to factory status: Restore a used control unit to its original state, allowing it to pair with another vehicle as if new.
- Calibrate coolant temperature sensor: Adjust the sensor calibration in the engine control module.
- Calibrate operating hours counter: Modify the recorded runtime of the control unit.
Five programming modes
Which mode you need depends on the control unit. The ECU Master supports all five.
| Mode | When to use it |
|---|---|
| OBD | Through the vehicle's diagnostic port without removing the control unit. The least invasive method, but not all operations are available this way. |
| BENCH | The removed control unit receives power and communication via the BENCH-C V1 cable on the workbench. This is the most common mode for cloning and writing data. |
| BOOT | The control unit is started in boot mode by making a fixed connection on the circuit board. Required for control units that don't release the data you want to read during normal operation. |
| JTAG | Direct processor access via the debug interface, using the C4-10 adapter. Useful when both bank and boot connections are unavailable. |
| BDM | The second debug interface on the same C4-10 adapter, for processors without JTAG support. |

How it works in practice
- Download the ECU Master software from the Download Center on the OBDSTAR website and install it on a PC running Windows 10 or later.
- Create an account and register the device so the configuration is unlocked for your serial number.
- Connect the ECU Master to the PC using the USB-A to USB-B cable and to the power outlet with the 14V, 60W adapter.
- Remove the control unit from the vehicle and connect it to the BENCH-C V1 cable, or establish the connection via the C4-10 adapter when JTAG or BDM access is required.
- Select the vehicle segment in the software and search for the controller by brand or model type; the search bar highlights matches.
- Read the data and save a backup before making any changes.
- Perform the modification and write the data back to the control unit.

💡 Good to know: The hardware is identical across all configurations; only the unlocked software features differ. If you choose a different module later, you simply activate the corresponding configuration on the same device — no need to purchase a second unit. Keep your device's serial number handy when ordering, as the configuration unlock is tied to it.
