The OBDSTAR M080 is an adapter cable that converts a 9-pin Caterpillar/Perkins OBD connection to a standard 16-pin OBD2 connector (J1962). The cable is intended for use with OBDSTAR readers or programmers and is specifically designed for diagnosing marine engines and marine applications with Caterpillar or Perkins engine management. The 9-pin connection on one end connects to the diagnostic plug of the engine management system, while the 16-pin OBD2 plug on the other end connects to the diagnostic device.

The adapter cable converts the pin configuration and signal assignment of the Caterpillar/Perkins interface to the OBD2 format, allowing the connected OBDSTAR device to communicate with the engine management system using the usual diagnostic protocol. This connection enables diagnostic functions such as reading fault codes and accessing sensor data. The cable contains no active electronics — the signal transmission occurs passively through the fixed pin connections between the two connectors.

  • Request system information: Data such as software versions and system identification of the engine control unit are retrieved via the diagnostic cable.
