The OBDSTAR CAN DIRECT-V2 is a cable kit that allows you to connect directly to a vehicle's CAN network independently of the OBD2 port. The kit comprises a main cable with OBD2 connectors and 4 mm banana plugs, two wire-piercing probes (back-probe pins) for the CAN-High and CAN-Low wires, and a manufacturer-specific Jeep/Chrysler CAN-C-bus connector. On the vehicle side, the kit connects to the OBD port and the vehicle's internal communication wires; on the device side, it connects to your diagnostic equipment.

This approach is necessary because the Security Gateway (SGW) in modern vehicles blocks reading and writing through the standard OBD2 port. By tapping directly into the CAN bus, and on FCA vehicles into the CAN-C-bus, an uninterrupted data stream is established between the vehicle network and the tester. The probes make contact with the copper core of the network wires, so you do not need to cut or strip cables. The kit unlocks network access only; which procedures you can then perform — key programming, dashboard calibration or reading CAN frames — is determined by your device's software and licences. The cable kit adds no vehicle coverage in itself.

KEY BENEFITS

Access beyond the Security Gateway — the connection is made physically to the CAN network, so read and write operations are not blocked by the gateway on the OBD2 port.
Connection without damaging wiring — the supplied spiral probes make contact with the copper core of the CAN-High and CAN-Low wires without requiring permanent removal of the sheath.
Dedicated connector for the FCA CAN-C-bus — the supplied Jeep/Chrysler connector couples directly to the CAN-C network, without loose tapping.
Standard connection materials — the kit works with OBD2 connectors and 4 mm banana plugs, so the connection side is not tied to a single cable type.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

Working with probes requires precision — careless piercing of a network wire can result in wire breakage or short circuit on the bus.
Knowledge of CAN topology is essential — you must know where CAN-High and CAN-Low run in this particular vehicle; the kit does not identify connection points for you.
Designed for OBDSTAR equipment — this set is an OBDSTAR accessory; whilst the standard banana connectors make connection to equipment from other manufacturers technically possible, such use falls outside OBDSTAR support.
Does not add vehicle coverage — the set provides the connection only; which makes and procedures are available depends on your own device's software.

Applications and functionality

Via direct bus connection, you can reach control modules located behind the gateway.

Control units you can access

  • Immobiliser module (IMMO): The module involved in proximity key programming, whose access via the OBD port is blocked by the gateway.
  • Instrument cluster: The dashboard, which requires write access for adjustments and calibrations.
  • Other protected control modules: Modules on the connected network; which ones vary by vehicle and network architecture.

What you can do

  • Programme proximity keys: Teach new smart keys to vehicles where the gateway blocks IMMO access via the OBD port.
  • Calibrate the instrument cluster: Perform adjustments or calibrations to the dashboard via direct CAN communication.
  • Read CAN frames: Retrieve raw CAN data and network packets for network analysis.
  • Perform protected diagnostics: Run active tests, clear permanent fault codes and complete repair work on control modules behind the gateway.
  • Note: What is actually possible depends on the vehicle, network architecture and your OBDSTAR device's software.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The presence of a Security Gateway and the CAN network architecture determine compatibility, not the model. The source documentation lists the makes below as application areas without specifying production years; only recent models are mentioned. First check which network is present in the vehicle and where you can tap in.

  • Toyota and Lexus: Key programming, including on systems 4A, 8A, 8A-A8, 8A-A9 and 8A-AA.
  • FCA (Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat and Alfa Romeo): Direct connection to the CAN-C network via the supplied make-specific connector.
  • Renault: Recent models, via CAN bus tap-in.
  • Opel: Recent models, via CAN bus tap-in.
💡
Good to know: Always connect the vehicle to a stabilised battery charger during direct network communication: voltage fluctuations can cause data corruption in the connected modules. Before ordering, verify that you can access the CAN connection points on the vehicle in question and that your device supports the required procedure.
