The OBDSTAR TCM-006 is an adapter cable with a 16-pin connector on one end for the Temic VL381 (0AW) transmission control module and a 15-pin DB15-connector on the other. On the vehicle side, the cable connects directly to the TCM connector of the VL381 unit—either on the transmission itself or on the removed unit—and not to the OBD2 port in the car.
The Temic VL381 (0AW) is used within the Volkswagen Group as a front-wheel-drive transmission. The dedicated 16-pin TCM connector exists because the unit is accessed at module level: through this connection, an OBDSTAR programmer can read the ISN and reprogram the TCM independently of the vehicle CAN network. This is precisely the difference from a standard OBD2 connection, where you are always dependent on a functioning onboard network. The cable simply provides the physical path between the Temic VL381 (0AW) TCM and the DB15 input of your device. What you can subsequently read, programme and identify is determined by your own OBDSTAR device's software and licence. The cable itself adds no vehicle coverage and does not work on quattro variants, as they use a different transmission control unit.

Applications and functionality
The TCM-006 establishes the connection between a Temic VL381 (0AW) transmission control unit and the DB15 port of your OBDSTAR device.
Control units you can access
- Temic VL381 (0AW) TCM: The transmission control unit of the 0AW gearbox, accessed via the 16-pin connector on the unit itself.
- Nothing else: The cable connects only to this transmission control unit and not to engine management or other vehicle modules.
What you can do
- Read ISN via the TCM: Extract the Internal Serial Number directly from the Temic 0AW unit, without involvement of the engine control module.
- Reprogram the TCM: Write software data and coding information to the transmission control unit, for example after unit replacement.
- Identify the unit: Read unit data and version information from the VL381 (0AW) TCM for identification and diagnostics.
- Work on a removed unit: Connect the connector to the TCM outside the vehicle, allowing the unit to be serviced on the workbench.
- Note: Which of these functions are actually available depends on your OBDSTAR device's software and licence; the cable only provides the physical connection.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The transmission type is what matters, not the model. The cable fits vehicles with a Temic VL381 (0AW) transmission control unit and front-wheel drive. If your car is listed below but has quattro, this cable is not the right choice.
