The OBDSTAR TCM-006 is an Adapter Cable that converts a Temic VL381 (0AW) 16-pin TCM connector to a 15-pin DB15 connection, suitable for use with OBDSTAR programming and reading equipment. The cable is designed for direct access to the transmission control module (TCM) in passenger cars of the Volkswagen Group, where the TCM is accessed outside the vehicle or directly at the connector without using the OBD2 port.

The Adapter Cable enables direct connection of the Temic VL381(0AW) transmission control module to an OBDSTAR device via the DB15 interface. This allows ISN reading and TCM programming at the unit level, independent of the vehicle network. The 16-pin TCM connector connects to the corresponding connector of the transmission unit, while the DB15 side links to the OBDSTAR platform for data processing and coding.

CAUTIONS

✕ Only compatible with OBDSTAR reading devices and programmers; not usable with diagnostic hardware from other manufacturers.
✕ Not suitable for quattro (AWD) versions; the cable is specifically designed for vehicles with front-wheel drive and Temic 0AW transmission.
✕ Only applicable to early model years of the A6 C7 and A7 4G8 (up to 2014), before the introduction of the S-Tronic facelift configuration.

Applications and Features

The OBDSTAR TCM-006 Adapter Cable supports the following functions when used with compatible OBDSTAR equipment on Temic VL381(0AW) transmission control modules:

  • ISN reading via TCM: The cable enables reading the Internal Serial Number (ISN) directly from the Temic 0AW transmission control module without involving the engine control unit.
  • TCM reprogramming: Through the DB15 connection, software data and coding information can be written to the transmission control module, for example after unit replacement.
  • Direct unit access: The connector attaches to the TCM plug outside the vehicle, allowing work on removed units on the workbench.
  • Transmission identification: The OBDSTAR device can read unit data and version information from the Temic VL381(0AW) TCM via this cable for identification and diagnosis.

Compatible Vehicles and Applications

The following vehicles are confirmed compatible with the OBDSTAR TCM-006 Adapter Cable, exclusively for versions with a Temic VL381(0AW) transmission control module and front-wheel drive:

Audi:

  • A4 (B8 / Type 8K): (2007–2015) — Engines: 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI (front-wheel drive only)
  • A5 (Type 8T / 8F Cabrio): (2007–2016) — Engines: 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI, 2.7 TDI (front-wheel drive only)
  • A6 (C7 / Type 4G): (2011–2014) — Engines: 2.0 TFSI, 2.8 FSI, 2.0 TDI (front-wheel drive only, before S-Tronic facelift)
  • A7 Sportback (Type 4G8): (2010–2014) — Early 2.8 FSI and 3.0 TDI variants with front-wheel drive only

Good to know: The Temic VL381(0AW) transmission is only used in FWD versions of the Volkswagen Group. Quattro and S-line variants with AWD use a different transmission unit and are not compatible with this Adapter Cable.
