The Mercedes 38-pin OBD1 to 16-pin OBD2 adapter cable is designed to connect modern diagnostic equipment to older Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. These vehicles, produced before the introduction of the European OBD2 standard, use a brand-specific round 38-pin diagnostic connector. The Adapter features a male 38-pin plug and a female 16-pin J1962 port, connected by a short and flexible cable guide that reduces mechanical stress on the vehicle port during diagnostics.

When connected, the adapter cable functions as a passive bridge that physically converts the pin-out of the older Mercedes system to the standardized 16-pin layout. It passes the necessary power, ground, and K-line communication signals to the connected tester. Since the original 38-pin system uses separate communication lines for different control units, the level of system access depends on the internal wiring of the Adapter and the multiplex functionality of the diagnostic tool used. This allows the technician to read protocols without manually bridging pins.

ADVANTAGES

Enables diagnosis of OBD1-generation vehicles with a standard 16-pin tester.
The flexible intermediate cable prevents excessive leverage on the often fragile diagnostic port in the engine compartment.
The connector housings feature a ribbed grip for secure plugging and unplugging.

IMPORTANT NOTES

For full vehicle coverage, a diagnostic device is required that explicitly supports OBD1 protocols and K-line multiplexing.
A standard EOBD reader will not work with this cable, as it only processes emission-related OBD2 protocols.

Applications and functionalities

This Adapter Cable provides the physical connection for the following diagnostic processes:

  • Read and clear fault codes: Physical transfer of signals to access engine management and connected control modules.
  • Live data display: Forwarding serial sensor data from vehicle modules to the 16-pin test equipment.
  • System diagnosis: Physical routing of communication lines to perform actuator tests, calibrations, and basic settings with compatible hardware.

Compatible vehicles and applications

This adapter cable is only suitable for the following older Mercedes-Benz models equipped with the specific 38-pin connector in the engine compartment:

Mercedes-Benz:

  • C-Class (W202): (1993 - 2000)
  • CLK-Class (W208): (1997 - 2002)
  • E-Class (W210): (1995 - 2002)
  • S-Class (W140 / W220): (1991 - 2003)
  • SLK-Class (R170): (1996 - 2004)
💡
Good to know: The 38-pin diagnostic connector on these models is located under the hood, often near the fuse box. Make sure the ignition is turned on (position 2) before establishing the connection with the diagnostic device.
