This adapter cable connects the round 38-pin diagnostic connector of older Mercedes-Benz passenger cars to a scan tool with a 16-pin OBD2 plug. On these models the 38-pin connector is located under the bonnet, usually near the fuse box, beneath a round cover.

On this generation, the OBD2 connector inside the vehicle, if fitted at all, only reads the engine management. The other control units, such as ABS, airbag, automatic transmission and climate control, are accessed via the 38-pin connector. The cable physically adapts the connection; the scan tool itself must support the Mercedes protocols of this generation.
