\nThe Jaltest JT2005 is a infrared thermometer with which you can surface temperature of a component without making contact. The black front panel displays Professional Infrared Thermometer, along with CE marking and protection rating IP65. It is a handheld model with a pull handle, that 286 grams weighs and 150 x 90 x 280 mm meet.\n
\nYou point the instrument at the area you want to measure and pull the trigger. The display shows a laser symbol: The sign that there is a laser pointer is projected to indicate your measurement area. The value appears in degrees Celsius, with HOLD as soon as you release it and below that the highest measured value. In the top left corner is the emissivity, the warning lights Hi and LO monitor the set thresholds, and with MODE, SET and LOG you cycle through the settings.\n

Applications and features
Every surface emits thermal radiation is captured by this instrument and converted into a temperature reading. This allows you to measure components that are too hot, too inaccessible or too difficult to reach to place a probe against. In practice, it almost always comes down to a temperature difference: two identical components side by side where one is running out of specification.
What you can measure with it
- Brakes: The temperature of each wheel brake after a test drive; a wheel that is significantly warmer than the others indicates a brake that is dragging.
- Cooling system: The temperature distribution across the radiator and the difference between the upper and lower hose, helping you identify a blocked core or a stuck thermostat.
- Exhaust aftertreatment: The temperature profile across the diesel particulate filter and SCR section, for example during regeneration.
- Bearings and hubs: A hub or bearing running warmer than its counterpart on the opposite side of the same axle.
- Electrical connections: A poor connection at a terminal, fuse holder or relay reveals itself as heat.
What you'll find on the instrument
- Display: The measured value in degrees Celsius, with HOLD and the maximum recorded value shown below.
- Laser: A laser symbol on the display indicates that the laser point is aligned with the measurement area.
- Emissivity: Top left of the screen, so you can see what the instrument is calibrated for before you record the reading.
- Alert lights: Two indicator lights above the display, HI and LO, illuminate whenever the measurement exceeds or falls below the set threshold.
- Operation: A trigger on the handle and MODE, SET and LOG buttons below the display.
What it's used for
The component is what matters, not the vehicle. An infrared thermometer requires no diagnostic connection, no plug and no power supply from the vehicle, so it works on a truck just as well as on a construction machine or a refrigerated trailer. Below is where it gets used most frequently in the workshop.
Commercial vehicle and bus:
- Brakes and wheel hubs: Compare per axle after a test drive.
- Engine and exhaust: Cooling, turbo, manifold and aftertreatment.
Trailer and refrigerated trailer:
- Brake temperature per axle: A dragging brake on a trailer is barely noticeable whilst driving.
- Cooling unit: The temperature of the evaporator and the walls of the cargo compartment.
Agricultural, terrain and construction machine:
- Hydraulics: Tank, cooler and return line, where excessive oil temperature becomes apparent first.
- Drive: Final drives and bearings that run hotter than their counterpart.
