The Jaltest JDC505A provides the connection between the 9-pin diagnostic connector on Caterpillar and Perkins engines and the 16-pin OBD2-socket of your Jaltest diagnostic cable. On the engine side, a round bayonet connector features a black housing, a light grey coupling ring and distinctive reddish-brown internals containing nine female pins: eight arranged in a circle and one at the centre. Caterpillar and Perkins use the same connector, allowing a single cable to serve both engine manufacturers. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm in length.

This adapter routes engine communication lines to the Jaltest Link. This gives your diagnostic equipment access to proprietary data lines — CDL for Caterpillar and PDL for Perkins — as well as the open J1939-bus, the legacy SAE J1708-line and the EMCP-controller for power generation. The proprietary line is what delivers meaningful diagnostics: Caterpillar engine J1939 control units have no functions listed in the coverage table. The cable is covered under Jaltest AGV (agricultural), Jaltest OHW (construction and off-road equipment) and Jaltest Marine (marine vessels).

KEY BENEFITS

Serves two engine manufacturers with one cable: Caterpillar CDL control units and Perkins PDL control units.
For Caterpillar, you also get the EMCP power generation controller with the Jaltest software when reading the engine data.
With newer Perkins engines, such as the 1206E, maintenance intervals are also included in the coverage.
The engine is what matters, not the machine: Caterpillar and Perkins engines are fitted by dozens of equipment manufacturers, and this adapter cable works across AGV, OHW and Marine applications.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Significant variations between control units: With Caterpillar, the J1939 control unit in the coverage table provides no functions, whereas the CDL control unit does deliver fault codes and measured values.
Caterpillar engines do not include maintenance intervals in the coverage; with Perkins, only some control units do.
For the 9-pin CAT/Perkins connector only: Caterpillar also uses a 14-pin connector, for which the JDC533A is intended.
This is not the Deutsch 9-pin J1939 connector: That version is green instead of black with a grey ring, and connects via the JDC217.9.

Applications and functionality

Through this connection, you access the engine control units of Caterpillar and Perkins using Jaltest software. Jaltest identifies the control units by engine type and data line — what you get varies significantly depending on the unit. The units listed below are from the CAT and Perkins coverage.

Control units you can access

  • CDL, engine control (Caterpillar): The Caterpillar Data Link — the manufacturer's proprietary diagnostic line where the useful functions are located.
  • PDL, engine control (Perkins): Perkins Data Link, the equivalent for Perkins engines.
  • J1939, engine management: The open bus protocol. Perkins engines include functions in the coverage; Caterpillar engines do not.
  • SAE J1708, engine control system: The older serial line protocol, found on Caterpillar 3406 among others.
  • EMCP, power generation: The control unit for power generation on stationary Caterpillar engines.

What you can do

  • Read and clear fault codes: Access the fault memory of the control unit with fault descriptions, and clear it after repair.
  • View live data: Monitor current sensor values on the control unit, with the ability to set alarm thresholds for out-of-range readings.
  • Maintenance: Check engine service intervals and record associated work in a report. Available only on some Perkins control units, such as the 1206E on J1939.
  • Coverage varies by unit: The coverage table differs by engine type and data protocol.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The engine type determines compatibility, not the machine. This cable fits any Caterpillar or Perkins engine with the 9-pin connector; these engines are fitted by dozens of equipment manufacturers. Jaltest covers the following series below; the reddish-brown wiring inside the connector indicates whether your engine has this connection type.

Caterpillar and Perkins:

  • Caterpillar 3000 series: 3054, 3054B, 3056, 3126, 3126B, 3176, 3176C, 3196, 3406, 3406E, 3408, 3408E, 3412, 3412E and 3456
  • Caterpillar 3500 and 3600 series: 3508, 3512, 3516 and variants B, C and E, plus 3606, 3608, 3612 and 3616
  • Caterpillar C and G series: The C-series engines and gas engines from the G-range
  • Perkins compact: 402D, 403D, 403F, 403J, 404D, 404F, 404J, 854E, 854F, 904D and 904J
  • Perkins 1100 and 1200 series: 1103C/D, 1104A/C/D, 1106D, 1204E/F/J, 1206E/F/J and 1706J
  • Perkins heavy-duty: 1306, 1506, 1506D, 2006, 2206, 2306, 2506, 2806, 3008 and 3012
💡
Good to know: The 9-pin CAT/Perkins connector is round, features a light grey coupling ring and a reddish-brown interior with nine sockets. The 14-pin Caterpillar plug is entirely black and corresponds to the JDC533A. Check the interior colour and count the positions before ordering.
