The Autool BT280 circuit tester is designed for performing comprehensive electrical diagnostics on 12V and 24V vehicle systems. The tester operates at a working voltage of 9V to 30V and can measure DC voltages up to a maximum of 100V with the robust measuring sensor. The device is powered directly from the vehicle battery via the included battery clamps and a 6-meter long power cable. This generous cable length allows the diagnostic technician to perform measurements around the entire vehicle without extensions, from fuse boxes in the engine compartment to lighting circuits at the rear of a commercial vehicle or trailer.
During fault diagnostics, the tester immediately detects the type of circuit via the automatic Smart Test mode, after which current measurement values for voltage and resistance appear directly on the 2.4-inch LCD color screen. Besides passive measuring, the device offers the ability to actively test actuators such as fans, windshield wiper motors, or lighting by applying direct voltage or ground to a component via the button. The built-in red and green LED indicators provide immediate visual confirmation of the detected polarity (power or ground). Thanks to the built-in work light, the test location is always well illuminated, significantly simplifying wire testing in dark and tight spaces.
Applications and Features
This circuit tester replaces multiple diagnostic devices by integrating standard measuring instruments with active test functions.
- Multimeter mode: Measures fundamental electrical values, including DC voltage (0.1V - 100V), resistance (1Ω - 200KΩ), current (up to 18A), and frequency. Also includes a diode test for checking semiconductors in the charging circuit or relay diodes.
- Oscilloscope mode: Generates a graphical display of the measured voltage over time. This is essential for checking varying signals such as PWM controls, sensor outputs, or detecting voltage drops on the data bus.
- Smart Test: An automated mode that independently recognizes whether the probe touches power, ground, or resistance. The tester immediately switches to the correct measurement unit, significantly speeding up troubleshooting.
- Activate components: Directly sends the available battery voltage or ground to an actuator or consumer to check functionality. The activation mode can be set to momentary (as long as the button is pressed), continuous (locked), or via a repetitive pulse signal.
Special Functions and Capabilities
For in-depth diagnostics of modern engine management systems, the tester is equipped with specific simulation and protection functions.
- Injector test: Includes four specific pulse modes for controlling fuel injectors. This allows the injector to be safely tested outside or inside the vehicle for mechanical opening, closing, and spray pattern without intervention from the engine ECU.
- Relay diagnosis: Using a specific test port and the included adapter cables, commonly used 4-pin and 5-pin automotive relays can be directly activated and tested for proper contact closure with the tester.
- 0-5V Power simulation: Generates an adjustable reference voltage between 0V and 5V, capped at a safe current of 100mA output. This function is used to simulate sensor outputs (such as a MAP or throttle position sensor) to test wiring to and the response of the ECU.
- Adjustable overload protection: Features an electronic "circuit breaker" whose trip current can be configured in the menu. This protects the tester, vehicle wiring, and the tested component against short circuits and excessive current draw during active powering.
