This adapter cable connects the 2x2 diagnostic connector of older passenger cars from Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen to a diagnostic tool with a 16-pin OBD2 plug. The connector consists of two two-pin plugs. On Volkswagen models it is often located under the gear lever cover or in the dashboard.

Volkswagen and Audi mainly used this connector from 1989 to 1994, and on some models up to 1997. The connector carries power supply, earth, the K-line and the L-line. Through these lines you read the engine management and, depending on the model, other control units. The cable physically adapts the connector; the diagnostic tool itself must support VAG diagnostics for this generation.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Your diagnostic tool must support VAG diagnostics via the 2x2 connector; the cable does not convert protocols.
✕A simple EOBD code reader does not work via this cable; it only reads emissions-related OBD2 data.
✕Not every older VAG engine has communicating engine management; on some engines nothing can be read via the 2x2 connector.
✕Which control units you can reach varies by model, engine and equipment.

  • Corrado G60 and 16V (53i): 1990 to 1992.
  • Corrado VR6 (53i): 1992 to 1995.
  • Passat VR6 and 2.0 16V (35i): 1990 to 1994.
  • Golf III (1H): 1992 to 1993.

Good to know: For Audi, Seat and Skoda, check in advance whether the car has the 2x2 connector. On Volkswagen models it is often located under the gear lever cover or in the dashboard. On Audi models it is often in the fuse and relay box under the bonnet or under the floor covering on the passenger side.
