This adapter cable connects the 3-pin diagnostic connector of older passenger cars from Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia to a diagnostic tool with a 16-pin OBD2 plug. On these models the 3-pin connector is usually located under the bonnet, near the fuse box, on the bulkhead or at the spring strut.

On this generation, a control unit often has its own 3-pin connector, for example the engine management, the ABS and the airbag. The connector does not supply power. For this reason, you power the diagnostic tool via the battery clamps on the cable. The cable converts the connector physically; the diagnostic tool itself must support diagnostics for this generation.

ADVANTAGES

✔Provides access to control units with their own 3-pin connector, such as engine management, ABS and airbag.
✔The battery clamps power the diagnostic tool, even though the 3-pin connector does not supply power itself.
✔You use your existing diagnostic tool with a 16-pin OBD2 plug; a separate make-specific tester is not required.
✔The cable works passively: No software or settings are required.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Your diagnostic tool must support Fiat diagnostics via the 3-pin connector; the cable does not convert protocols.
✕A simple EOBD code reader does not work via this cable; it only reads emissions-related OBD2 data.
✕Connect the battery clamps first; without power, the diagnostic tool will not work.
✕You read one control unit at a time; for another system, you switch the plug to the corresponding connector.

Applications and functions

The cable is intended for garages and technicians who read older models from the Fiat group with the 3-pin connector.

Control units you can access

  • Engine management: Connector under the bonnet.
  • ABS: Often also under the bonnet.
  • Airbag: Connector on the passenger side.
  • Other systems: Varies by model and specification.

What you can do

  • Fault codes: Read and clear per system.
  • Live data: View current sensor values.
  • Actuator tests: Where offered by the diagnostic tool.
  • Fault finding: Read out each control unit separately.

How to use it

  1. Locate the connector: Find the 3-pin plug of the correct system.
  2. Connect power: Attach the clamps to the positive and earth terminals of the battery.
  3. Connect: Insert the 3-pin plug into the connector.
  4. Connect the diagnostic tool: Plug in the 16-pin connector and switch the ignition on.
  5. Read out: Select the make, model and control unit.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The decisive factor is the 3-pin diagnostic connector of the Fiat group. The cable is suitable, among others, for the following models with that connector:

Alfa Romeo:

  • 146 (930): 1994 to 2000.

Fiat:

  • Punto (176): 1993 to 1999.
  • Bravo and Brava (182): 1995 to 1999.
  • Marea (185): 1996 to 1999.
💡
Good to know: The 3-pin connectors are usually located under the bonnet, near the fuse box, on the bulkhead or at the spring strut. The airbag connector is often on the passenger side in the interior. A car may have several 3-pin connectors; try them one by one.

Because of a malfunction in our camper we wanted to read it out. It doesn't have a "standard" obd connector, but a different one where this set could be applied. Fortunately, with this adapter cable the car could be read out.
