The Autool TG501 is a paint thickness gauge for measuring coating thickness on both ferro (Fe) and non-ferro (NFe) metal substrates. The device operates based on magnetic induction for steel and the eddy current principle for aluminum and other non-ferro metals, with automatic substrate recognition. With a measuring range of 0 to 2,000 µm, a resolution of 0.1 µm up to 100 µm, and an accuracy of ±(3%+1 µm), the meter is suitable for inspecting original paint, repaired bodywork, and filler layers on car bodies.

During measurement, the sensor on the underside of the device is placed against the surface, after which a measurement value appears on the LCD screen within about half a second. The TG501 automatically switches between Fe and NFe mode based on the detected substrate and displays the value in µm, mm, or mil. The screen features automatic screen rotation and has a backlight for measurements in poorly lit areas. The meter includes a zero calibration for compensation on a reference surface and can store up to 80 measurements for later reading.

ADVANTAGES

Automatic substrate recognition switches between ferro and non-ferro metals without manual setting.
Internal storage of 80 measurements makes noting down measurements during a body inspection unnecessary.
Car screen rotation keeps the value readable when measuring on vertical or hard-to-reach panels.
Suitable for measurements on curved surfaces with a radius of convex 5 mm and concave 25 mm.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The minimum measuring surface has a diameter of 15 mm; narrower edges and trims cannot be measured reliably.
For ferro substrates, a minimum plate thickness of 0.30 mm is required, for non-ferro 0.05 mm.
For an accurate measurement, a zero calibration must first be performed on an untreated reference surface.
No data output to PC or smartphone; stored measurements can only be viewed on the device itself.

Applications and functionalities

The Autool TG501 supports the following measurement and reading functions:

  • Ferro measurement (Fe): Determines the coating thickness on steel and other magnetic surfaces via magnetic induction, useful for inspecting bodywork on cars.
  • Non-ferro measurement (NFe): Measures layer thickness on aluminum and other non-magnetic metals, such as engine hoods and panels of aluminum bodies, using the eddy current principle.
  • Automatic mode detection: Automatically detects whether the substrate is ferro or non-ferro and selects the corresponding measurement method without manual setting.
  • Unit switching: Switches between µm, mm, and mil via the UNIT button for display according to the desired standard.
  • Zero calibration: Sets the meter on an uncoated reference so that deviations caused by temperature or material are compensated.
  • Measurement value storage: Stores up to 80 measurements with sequence numbers, allowing measurement series per panel or vehicle to be reviewed.
  • Clear measurement value: Deletes individual or all stored values via the trash button.

Special functions and capabilities

The TG501 stands out with the following features:

  • Automatic screen rotation: The display rotates the measurement value with the device orientation, keeping the value readable during measurements on the side or underside of a vehicle.
  • High-precision sensor with fast response: Provides up to 2 measurements per second, allowing a panel to be checked at multiple points in a short time.
  • Backlight with dim function: Suitable for use in dark workshops and under tarps during appraisal or damage repair.

Package Contents

  • 1x Autool TG501 | Paint thickness gauge
  • 3x AAA 1.5V battery

💡
Good to know: Perform zero calibration on an uncoated metal reference of the same type (steel or aluminum) as the panel to be measured. Calibration on a different material can structurally affect the measurement value, especially for thin layers under 50 µm.
