The OBDSTAR TCM-012 is an adapter cable featuring a 6-pin connector on the vehicle side for Siemens VGS2-NAG2 and VGS3-NAG2 transmission control units, and a 15-pins DB15 connector on the device side. The 6-pin side connects directly to the TCM, which on most Mercedes-Benz models is mounted on or near the transmission housing and is accessible from underneath the vehicle.

These TCM variants are fitted to the Mercedes-Benz 722.9 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox and are identified by their 6-pin connector. This connection supplies power to the control unit and transfers the diagnostic and programming protocols required for reading or rewriting transmission data. The connection bypasses the vehicle OBD port entirely, enabling operation during TCM replacement, data recovery or adaptation reset. The DB15 side plugs directly into your OBDSTAR device port without intermediate adapters. The cable provides access to this transmission control unit only and adds no additional functionality itself. What you can programme, reset or read depends on your OBDSTAR device's software and licence. For bench operation, you will also need an external power supply, as the TCM receives no power outside the vehicle.

CONSIDERATIONS

✕OBDSTAR only — the cable works with OBDSTAR diagnostic and programming devices and is not compatible with diagnostic hardware from other manufacturers.
✕No additional coverage — the cable provides access to the TCM, but whether programming and adaptation reset are possible on your vehicle depends on your own device.
✕External power supply required — when used on the bench, the TCM receives no power from the vehicle; you must supply this separately.
✕This connector only — exclusively for TCMs with the 6-pin Siemens VGS2-NAG2 or VGS3-NAG2 connection; other units or connector types are not supported.

Applications and functionality

The TCM-012 connects the Siemens VGS2-NAG2 or VGS3-NAG2 control unit of the 722.9 7G-Tronic transmission to the DB15 input of your OBDSTAR programmer.

Control units you can access

  • Siemens VGS2-NAG2: The transmission control unit of the 722.9 7G-Tronic with 6-pin connector.
  • Siemens VGS3-NAG2: The later version of the same control unit, with identical connection.
  • Transmission side only: This cable does not provide access to other control units in the vehicle.

What you can do

  • Programme the TCM: Overwrite or reprogram the control unit, for example when replacing it or resetting to factory data.
  • Reset adaptation: Clear stored transmission adaptations, after which the 7G-Tronic will perform a new learning sequence for shift characteristics.
  • Read data: Retrieve the current TCM configuration, software version and stored parameter data for diagnostics or archiving before replacement.
  • Work in bench mode: Establish a direct connection to the removed TCM without using the vehicle's OBD port.
  • Note: Which of these functions are actually available depends on the software and licence of your OBDSTAR device; the cable only provides the connection.
