The OBDSTAR M081 is the adapter cable for the 8-pin MAN diagnostic connector on marine engine units. It converts that factory connector to the 16-pin OBD2 (J1962) port on your OBDSTAR diagnostic device and connects at the engine side to the diagnostic port of the engine management system.

MAN uses a proprietary 8-pin connector on these engines instead of a standard interface. The fixed wiring links the correct pins of the MAN connector to the corresponding OBD2 pin positions, allowing data exchange via the available protocols — such as K-line — without additional configuration. The cable provides access to the engine diagnostic interface of the vessel; it does nothing beyond that. Which functions you can perform depends on the capabilities of your OBDSTAR device and software support for MAN marine applications.

ADVANTAGES

Proprietary port via standard interface — the 8-pin MAN connector becomes accessible through a standard OBD2 port, with no extra hardware required.
Fixed pin wiring — the connection between both connectors is direct and requires no prior setup.
For marine use — this specific connector is necessary on MAN marine engines; standard cables will not fit.
K-line communication — the cable carries the protocols used by MAN engine management.

LIMITATIONS

MAN 8-pin connector only — other engine manufacturers or vehicles are not supported, even with a similar plug.
No model list by year of manufacture — OBDSTAR provides no engine types or production years for this cable; the existing connector is what matters.
OBDSTAR equipment only — diagnostic devices from other manufacturers are not compatible.
Adds no additional coverage — available functions depend on your device and software support for MAN marine diagnostics.

Applications and functionality

Via the 8-pin port, you access the engine management system of the MAN marine engine.

Control units you can reach

  • Engine management system: The engine control unit of the MAN marine engine behind the 8-pin diagnostic connector.
  • Other modules: Whether additional units on board are accessible varies by installation and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: Retrieve stored and active diagnostic trouble codes from the engine management system via the 8-pin connector.
  • Clear fault codes: Delete stored trouble codes in the engine system after diagnosis and repair.
  • Request live data: Read current sensor values and engine parameters in real time from the engine management system.
  • Establish connection: The MAN port is converted to the OBD2 input your device uses.
  • Note: What is available depends on MAN marine software support in your OBDSTAR device.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The 8-pin MAN diagnostic connector is the determining factor, not the engine type. Compatibility is based on available product information; specific engine types with model years are not specified.

  • MAN: Marine engines with 8-pin OBD connector
💡
Good to know: The 8-pin MAN diagnostic connector is typically located near the engine management system in the engine compartment of the vessel; exact location varies by boat type and engine installation. Verify the engine connector has eight pins before ordering.
