The OBDSTAR M042A is an adapter cable that converts an 8-pin OBD connection to a standard 16-pin OBD2 (J1962) connector. The cable is specifically designed for motorcycles from the brands Indian, Victory, and Polaris, which use a factory-specific 8-pin diagnostic port. This adapter cable allows an OBDSTAR diagnostic device or programmer to be connected to vehicles without a standard OBD2 port.

The cable connects the 8-pin vehicle-side connector — matching the diagnostic pinout of Indian, Victory, and Polaris motorcycles — to the 16-pin OBD2 side of the diagnostic device. The signal pins are internally linked so the required K-line or CAN communication is correctly passed to the reader. The cable length provides enough flexibility when connecting to the typically shielded or hard-to-reach diagnostic ports on these motorcycles.

Applications and functionalities

The Adapter Cable supports the following diagnostic functions via an OBDSTAR reader or programmer on Indian, Victory, and Polaris motorcycles with an 8-pin diagnostic port.

  • Read fault codes: Stored and active diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are read from the vehicle’s control units to determine the cause of a malfunction.
  • Clear fault codes: After diagnosis and repair, stored fault codes can be erased from the memory of the respective control unit.
  • Display live data: Current sensor and actuator measurements are read in real-time via the diagnostic connection, useful during driving or stationary diagnosis.
  • Read ECU information: Identification data of the control unit, such as software version and unit number, are retrieved via diagnostic communication.
