The Jaltest JDC533A is the adapter cable for Caterpillar featuring the manufacturer's proprietary 14-pin diagnostic connector: on the engine side you'll find this connector, while the interface side connects to the 16-pin OBD2 of your Jaltest diagnostic cable. The 14-pin plug is Caterpillar's own standard, located in the cab or at the engine, making the same cable compatible with equipment from various manufacturers that use a CAT engine.

Through this connection, your diagnostic equipment accesses the Caterpillar Data Link (CDL), the manufacturer's proprietary data bus where all diagnostic functions operate: fault codes, live data, and ECU information. The cable also covers the legacy SAE J1708 protocol found on models like the 3406, plus the EMCP controller for power generation in stationary applications. The open J1939 protocol provides no functionality on these engines, so all diagnostic capability runs through CDL. This cable falls under the Jaltest OHW (Off-Highway machines) category.

KEY BENEFITS

✔Unlocks the Caterpillar Data Link (CDL), the proprietary diagnostic bus with full feature access.
✔Reads both the engine and the EMCP power generation controller on stationary Caterpillar engines.
✔Covers the legacy SAE J1708 protocol as well, including models like the 3406.
✔Works across equipment from different manufacturers: what matters is the CAT engine series, not the machine brand.

IMPORTANT NOTES

✕The J1939 protocol provides no functionality: With Caterpillar engines, this unit offers no functions; fault codes, live data, and ECU information are only accessible via CDL.
✕With Caterpillar engines, no maintenance intervals, no component control, and no parameters are covered.
✕For the 14-pin connector only; Caterpillar and Perkins also use a 9-pin connection, for which the JDC505A is designed.
✕Requires a Jaltest Link with valid OHW license; the cable itself does not add coverage.

Applications and Functions

Using this connection, you access the Caterpillar engine control units with Jaltest software. Jaltest identifies them by data line.

Control Units You Can Access

  • CDL, Engine Control Module: The Caterpillar Data Link. Read fault codes, live data, and ECU information here.
  • J1939, Engine Control Module: The open bus protocol. With Caterpillar engines, no functions are covered in the coverage table.
  • SAE J1708, Engine Management System, Unit Injector System: The legacy serial line, found on the 3406 among others.
  • EMCP, Electric power generation: The control unit for power generation in stationary installations.

What You Can Do

  • Read and clear fault codes: Access the control unit's fault memory with fault descriptions, and clear it after repair.
  • View live data: Monitor current sensor values on the control unit, with the ability to set alarm thresholds for out-of-range values.
  • The EMCP control unit of a generator set also provides fault codes, live data, and ECU information.
  • Not covered with Caterpillar engines: Maintenance intervals, component control, and parameters.

Compatible Vehicles and Applications

The connector type determines compatibility, not the machine. Caterpillar engines are installed by many equipment manufacturers; the engine series determines compatibility, not the machine brand.

💡
Good to know: The 14-pin diagnostic connector is Caterpillar's own connection and is located in the cab or at the engine. Caterpillar also uses a 9-pin connector. Be sure to check which connector your engine has before ordering.
